    simple shell question

Nushell is very incomplete yet, especially on Windows it has a few annoyances left to fix.

Most languages are more readable than shell script.

    simple shell question

No, not quite - especially newer shells tend to reinvent the wheel. Even worse: zsh claims to have "compatibility modes" for other shells. None of those are not broken.

    simple shell question

/bin/sh is the Bourne shell. Depends. For interactive use, probably either the tcsh (once configured - that's my personal configuration, you probably don't need all of it) or the zsh. For scripting, the KornShell (both mksh and ksh93 are pretty good); but then again, I warmly recommend to use...

How many years did that cost you so far? :) Because if it's only seconds, this is probably entirely irrelevant.

[citation needed], as “the BSDL” has the same requirements as the CDDL, minus an optional patent clause which would not apply to FreeBSD anyway.

What I meant was that OpenIndiana (illumos) did though. Increasingly more FreeBSD stuff is found in illumos distributions. And yes, I like SMF a lot. :)

SCO and UnixWare are quite outdated. OpenIndiana is a quite modern SysV UNIX with a quite intriguing init system (SMF) that borrowed a lot from FreeBSD now.

Do you need an antivirus on FreeBSD today ?

"PDF/A differs from PDF by prohibiting features unsuitable for long-term archiving[.] (...) PDF/A-1 files will not necessarily conform to PDF/A-2, and PDF/A-2 compliant files will not necessarily conform to PDF/A-1." LMAO.

jwz invented HTML e-mail. It went downhill from there.

“Antivirus” software usually imposes another risk for your security, as it is potentially insecure software that runs with full admin privileges. You shouldn’t need one on any OS.

    The state of FreeBSD desktop

[X] I could use it, but the systems I use instead are not worse.

Preferred DE of the FreeBSD users

Not quite. I would like to see more competition on the desktop. OpenBSD is a pretty good desktop experience and it would be relatively easy to let FreeBSD have a similar configuration without giving up its server strength. Then again, there are GhostBSD and MidnightBSD for that.
