    Upgrading to 15.0 from source

A question which I thought would be easy to find an answer, but I haven't yet. Suppose you have used pkgbasify to get your system ready for pkgbase. Then you change your mind and decide to upgrade from source. I know that if you've used pkgbasify you can't use freebsd-update. But can you do a...

bhyve 15.0-RELEASE causes unknown failure of Bhyve PCI-Passthru guest

For what it's worth, I'm also having issues (with vm-bhyve) and networking. It happened on 14.3, guests wouldn't start, and it turned out the switch was having problems and I was unable to destroy the switch. SirDice pointed out a PR that might be the cause. I updated ports and reinstalled...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

Erichans, you're right, I was wrong, there is no change in the handbook. I read the wrong section, but the section about major upgrades has the base_release_0. Fingerprints were /usr/share/keys/pkg. On the one that I carelessly upgraded to 15-STABLE, I had an older BE that still had 14.3. So...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

Ok, the handbook seems to have been changed. It now reads FreeBSD-base { url = "pkg+https://pkg.freebsd.org/${ABI}/base_release_0"; mirror_type = "srv"; signature_type = "fingerprints"; fingerprints = "/usr/share/keys/pkg"; enabled = yes; } That seems to be a recent...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

Hrm, I'm still confused. (sorry to be a bit of a help vampire here). But then which is the correct url to use for the pkg+https, VERSION_MINOR or release_0. That is, which did you use on your smooth upgrade? (I really hope that the handbook soon makes this a bit clearer).

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

freezr I'm a bit confused now. (or more confused). You use the line url = "pkg+https://pkg.freebsd.org/${ABI}/base_release_${VERSION_MINOR}"; I thought, from that handbook page, that for upgrading to 15.0 one should use pkg+https://pkg.freebsd.org/${ABI}/base_release_0 to get RELEASE. But I'm...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

freezr, yeah, that was part of what confused me. I tried things url = "pkg+https://pkg.freebsd.org/${ABI}/releng/15t"; and others before giving up. Turns out that it's url = "pkg+https://pkg.freebsd.org/${ABI}/base_latest"; Actually, see below, that was wrong, that gave...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

I tried to upgrade a fairly unimportant machine today with pgkbase. Firstly I couldn't quite figure out the handbook's instructions. That's on me for being dumb. Handbook instructions are at https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/cutting-edge/ Search for pkgbase on the page. Anyway, I...

Solved Upgrade from 14.3 to 15.0-RELEASE using pkgbase (wrong packagesite and No trusted public keys found)

My thanks is for the link, I didn't even know there was a handbook section, I only knew of the wiki. I've not yet tried it though.

    IRC help

Every time I see that, I get annoyed again at how Slack really pulled the Embrace, engulf, exinguish bit. When they first started, one was able to use it with irssi. I think it was in early 2018 that they stopped that. Fortunately, there is wee-slack which still works well, though the irssi...

    How do you name directories?

Like SirDice, I have a bunch of test, tmp and so on. Every so often I go to look at what's in them and usually wind up deleting them as they're something I only used once. For example, on a slack chat with a user. "I'm going to give you a temporary password" Then I make a file tempusername with...

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

So, today, playing with a VM, more or less out of curiosity, I installed 14.3, Then I ran pkgbasify. After doing that, I wanted to see what would happen, so I ran freebsd-update to get to 15.0. Following the instructions here, https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.0R/installation/, after running...

    API mismatch on starting xorg

I've had similar problems in the past. I've always, so far, been able to solve it with using git to get ports to the latest, then running portmaster install nvidia-kmod which will pull in and/or update all the things needed.

    Searching for the perfect keyboard

For those into building their own keyboards, there's Glorius. They sell various keyboards, switches, keys, and the like. I had one, wound up giving it away--it was a TKL and I decided I wanted the 65%. https://www.gloriousgaming.com/

pkg base upgrade equivalent of freebsd-update

At present, when installing 15, at least the RC's, you're giving the choice during installation. I don't remember the exact wording but you're given an option to use pkgbase when installing though it's marked experimental or something similar.

    Searching for the perfect keyboard

I find myself liking the 65% keyboard, as I have limited desk space. At one point, I had to use silent red switches because the noise bothered my wife, but since we've moved, I've been able to use brown switches. As I use mpv a lot I needed (wanted?) arrow keys. And, on this one at least, I...

Solved Running pkg upgrade today broke mpv

I don't think it was due to pkgbasify, but that's just my feeling, not based on knowledge. From fernandel's post, I didn't even have to do as much work as I did, sounds like pkg update, pkg upgrade would have fixed it. For what it's worth, (probably very little), on a VM only running a few...
