    OpenBSD?

OpenBSD works really nicely on laptops, especially Thinkpads.

    Ablecom NAS Chasis (8-bays)

Has anyone seen this out in the wild yet? http://www.taiwantrade.com.tw/EP/ablecom/products-detail/en_US/962648/8Bays_Tower_Chassis/ Apparently it is based on the 4-bay version currently in use by iXsystems for their FreeNAS Mini. http://www.ablecom.com/product/?recordId=307&fPath=13 If so...

    ZFS vs HAMMER

    ZFS vs HAMMER

HAMMER is pretty fascinating and I wish it were available in FreeBSD as an option alongside ZFS. I also wish it were available across all the BSDs. I'm not sure I understand why NetBSD for example, is working on a ZFS port when they are really in the embedded space...where HAMMER will excel...

FreeBSD on recent Lenovo Thinkpad W541

There is a thread entitled "what would you like to see in FreeBSD". Updating drm is one of the most requested items. Haswell graphics support would be awesome.

FreeBSD on recent Lenovo Thinkpad W541

This is interesting. Haswell chips have been out for a while now. AFAIK, only DragonflyBSD works well with Haswell graphics (including acceleration) out of the box. Your Nvidia card would not be supported though. Its a pity because this looks like a killer machine otherwise!

What would you like to see in FreeBSD

This has been a very educational thread for me. I had to look up quite a number of these technologies as I had never heard of them before. I think for my use case I'd have to second a few of the already mentioned comments, namely: LibreSSL - It may not be a drop in replacement just yet, but it...

R math: help to for installing R packages

Strangely enough now math/rkward-kde4 isn't pre-compiled anymore and compilation fails. Has anyone else managed to get it to compile on FreeBSD 10.2?

What is the future of FreeBSD as desktop OS?

I even referred to that site when putting together my own machines! It was extremely helpful.

What is the future of FreeBSD as desktop OS?

FreeBSD is awesome, and works quite nicely as a desktop system now. 64-bit Linux compatibility is on the way for the odd application that requires specific Linux kernel features. If you want flash there is a wrapper for that, if you want high end graphics, there is a closed-source plugin for...

PF Converting pfSense router to stock FreeBSD

Thanks, I was a curious as to whether it was just a drop in rule exchange. Looks like some additional legwork is required. Thanks!

PF Converting pfSense router to stock FreeBSD

Hi! Yes, in fact is is just a firewall/router, nothing complicated. I ran these two commands and did indeed get the rulesets. Worked very nicely. I imagine my next step would lie in setting up the respective conf files on stock FreeBSD and disabling unneeded services?

    ZFS vs HAMMER

Were you using HAMMER previously? Can you comment on whether the historical access functionality offers some protection against corruption? For example if a file gets corrupted on disk is it possible to roll back to a version before the corruption happened?

PF Converting pfSense router to stock FreeBSD

Hi, I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have had a nicely configured pfSense router/firewall functioning well for quite some time. I'd like to however convert the machine that it is running on to one using stock FreeBSD and nothing else. Where is it possible to retrieve...

    Best Laptop for FreeBSD

The T420 doesn't have this problem, the T420s does.

    Best Laptop for FreeBSD

I just tried it and no, it does not work. The install goes fine, but the system does not recognize it on reboot. I think this was an issue from the Lenovo side. I don't recall exactly what it was. There is apparently a work around, but it seems to be easier to just avoid those laptops rather...

Avoid the T420s if you want to use ZFS. It does not support GPT partitions sadly.
