Very interesting discussion. I was reading elsewhere that now the majority of commits to the OpenZFS umbrella project are now coming from Linux developers. It would seem then that it is only a matter of time before Linux specific features make OpenZFS more proficient on Linux as opposed to...
This is eye watering, I knew that it took a ton of resources to develop a filesystem but this is serious business. One wonders how a single person could then pull off the HAMMER filesystem.
I have come across many FreeBSD users that say they miss the days of the 4.X series. I find FreeBSD currently to be rock solid and very useful for quite a wide range of use cases. An interesting set of opinions nonetheless. Its nice to reflect every now and then.
Hello!
I was wondering if there were perhaps users that read these forums that might be using FreeBSD on IBM's POWER/OpenPOWER platforms in production systems?
I did manage to find some short write-ups about some developers getting things going on POWER, but they are a few years old.
Apparently it gets worse:

There seems to be some consensus building that it really doesn't matter how secure the OS is. As long as there are hardware level CPUs that can act independently of the OS, with access to RAM and the networking hardware its still possible to take over control of a system (i.e. Intel Management...
This thread was an interesting read. Has anyone ever heard of these guys: https://www.raptorengineering.com/TALOS/prerelease.php
Otherwise the only semi-modern alternative for secure hardware seems to be based on the Interlagos and Valencia Opteron CPUs and the corresponding Asus motherboards...
My guess is that they would be open to user submissions for possible GSOC projects. At least there is a page with past projects https://www.freebsd.org/projects/summerofcode.html
Perhaps you can submit the idea?
We might have a chance at getting HAMMER2 within our lifetimes if we help spread the word about the Google Summer of Code Project ideas around HAMMER2. Specifically the ones that target the copies feature and the block encryption feature. Then their developers can focus on the core components of...
I've been reading a lot lately about security issues in FreeBSD, what is the real issue at the moment? Is it a matter of wanting backwards compitability? Is it really that difficult to break some conventions if it increases security for end users?
Right. So I meant to follow the thread but got tied up with new year stuff.
I can confirm that the X150M Pro ECC will indeed boot without an installed video card. I think I might actually run it like this from now on. I was using an old Sapphire Radeon HD 3450 card that I found secondhand...
