    A stable version of BIND is included in base system. There is no need to install it via ports until and unless you want really new stuff. Try running portsnap before running make. Also see UPDATING file in /usr/ports directory and search for BIND

    FreeBSD as a virtual server

    I really miss vmware server on Freebsd. Older version used to run but they dropped the support after version 4. Virtualbox is good choice. XEN will run in dom0 under FreeBSD 8.0.

    You can throttle user login with pf itself. By default root login is not allowed. Only normal user can login over ssh and su - them. However, most hosting companies changes this so that root can get into it. Take a look at my previous security thread...

    Really? No offense, I enjoy jails too. But Linux does have support for jail like systems using Openvz or Linux-VServer. Both are open source project with its own pros and cons.

    You cannot build anything without downloading source code. So it does download required files. I've stopped using portupgrade a long time ago. I use portmaster. It does shows all config option at the beginning. May be try out portmaster.

    ITX + Hardware Raid NAS

    I've used both 3ware and Adaptec raid controller. No problem what soever. However, most of my boxes are in RAID10 or RAID1 configuration. Unfortunately ITX wasn't enough for our work load. So we end up with high end server.

    BBS only need telnet client and not telnet server. OpenSSH is by default installed and there is no need to configure telnet or use of r* command.
