Yes, lock and may be socket file (I'm not sure about it) but they will get clear when any one of the following is executed (default is 3 days and can be configured):
/etc/periodic/daily/100.clean-disks
/etc/periodic/daily/110.clean-tmps
This will format in ufs file system. Use newfs_msdos to create a new MS-DOS (FAT / FAT 32) file system.
newfs_msdos /dev/ad1s1
Once formatted you can mount it:
mkdir /mnt/usb
mount -t msdos /dev/da1s1 /mnt/usb
Replace ad1s1 with actual device names.
another option is to use rsync to push file from build to target server:
rsync -av /usr/src root@server1:/usr/src
rsync -av /usr/obj root@server2:/usr/obj
...
etc
I think rsync is not installed by default but nfs client and server exits in base. So SirDice method is quite good, IMHO.
You can use freebsd-update utility or freebsd source code build world method. See
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/8.0R/announce.html

Backup data before you use any one of the method,
I cannot think of anything else but 8 has new networking stack to communicate between jail. Jails can now have its own firewall and routing too. You need to add 'options VIMAGE' to kernel config and build it again. See jail(8) and epair(4) man pages.
Yes, almost everything can be installed from DVD. However, when you purchase something from freebsdmall they donate some money to freebsd project. Either way download and donate some money directly or purchase it and they will donate it.
Current handbook is sufficient. All the commands and installation infomration works as it is under FreeBSD 8.0. So go ahead download both ISO and handbook.
Earlier, someone pointed to me: http://www.freebsd.org/releases/8.0R/relnotes.html
I think today (maybe within a few hours) or max tomorrow ken will send email announcement. Almost all mirrors got bits now.

I've no problem here tested with VM-WKST 7.0. However, other boxes under ESX are running 7.2. I will see if I can test 8.0 on one of other box. Are you using cd image provided by Vmware or ports collection?
Only server and workstation grade hardware provide this kind of data via sensor. And most of them dependents upon proprietary drivers and java front ends. Few drivers are there in both Linux / FreeBSD that support command line options via ipmitool to read the data via CLI. But as I said you...
