Vmware 3.0? Workstation? We have couple of 8.0 desktop running under Windows XP and Ubuntu desktop. No problem, we are using Workstation 7.0 with full 3d support. You need set use host settings for monitors or set it manually :

What about USB? Can you boot from USB pen 128/256Mb? If not network boot will also help but than you need TFT and at least some sort of working UNIX / BSD box.
Run restore in intractive mode and you use ls command to list files. If there is any error it will tell you on fly.
restore -i -f /nas/usr.dump

Have you tried other players? xmms is outdated try mplayer or audacious2. I had other problem with sound but using latest audacious2 version fixed it. May be it will help you too..
