    Stop ntpd from serving

Sorry I mean limit binding to specific IPs and interfaces. We have some server with 50+ IPs and ntpd take control of all ips. There is no option under 7.2 or earlier version, to bind ntpd to a specific ip or interface. Though latest version claims to support binding feature, but it is not...

    pf "route-to" problems

Take a look at the following: http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/pools.html It is used for load balancing traffic. Are you trying to load balance it or you want old good static routing setup?

    Dumbest computing mistake you've made?

Another one not related to software; I dropped Xeon chip while adding another cpu to existing server. I send it back to retailer. At first, they refused to accept it but when my boss twisted their hand, they agreed to forward it to OEM / Intel. We have large account with them for suppling...

    Stop ntpd from serving

Remove ntpd and use openntpd. NTPD do not have option to restrict to certain ips, it means jail will be in trouble as it takes control of all ips. Configuration is also complicated. Just install openntpd from the ports. Another option is to use firewall to drop incoming ntpd traffic.

    question about webserver in jail

Are you using firewall to route traffic between jails? The best I can recommend it to run tcpdump when slow things started on your system. I've also noticed that same range IPs are assigned to different interface. Can you paste your rc.conf and firewall rules?

    Best way to update

/etc/src.conf and kernel config files need to be configured to remove or add features to both base and kernel itself. Read man page or handbook.

Jails in a 2 NIC server

this is confusing part. If ssh terminate 2 minutes after successful login, than you need to configure both ssh client and server. If message is "Connection reset by peer", than you need to configure firewall.

tor is good as long as it is done via trusted parties. Tor is also open to attack if someone can watch both ends of a user's connection. Wikipedia article has more info.

    Setting up DNS

Usually, you register domain with registrar. Next step is to create ns1 and ns2 by registering them with your domain registrar. Once registered. Install djbdns or use BIND 9.x from base system. I also recommend djbdns. Take a look at the following tutorial under freebsd...

    Getting back into FreeBSD

No, I've been using since 3.x days and it is getting better and better everyday. Right now I'm using 8RC3 and it works like a charm. However, most of servers are powered by 7.x series. During first .com bubble FreeBSD 4 was the # 1 choice of ISPs and WHCs. It was fun.. jr
