    I know I'm a smartass because....

... I refuse to read MS Office .doc* files. I could convert them to .pdf myself using various internet applications, but I always send back emails with complaints about non-portability of such files. This is again wrong, but I suffer from lack of respect for people who use * Office programs for...

    Installing ports without man pages

If you use the -D flag for make you don't have to set its value. Also, I think NOPORTDOCS refers to documentation in /usr/local/share/doc and doesn't affect the man pages. I think ports install their man pages automatically, but if you're 100% sure you don't need them, you can simply runrm -rf...

Controlling swap usage and buffer levels

Hello again, I have noticed that FreeBSD starts using swap relatively fast and keeps quite a lot of memory in the buffers. According to tuning(7), one is able to control some of these parameters with sysctl(8), but I don't think this utility offers enough control. Is there a way I can...

Failure when building LibreOffice from ports

My suggestion is to use /usr/ports as your default location of the ports tree and try building again with conservative settings in /etc/make.conf and /etc/src.conf. If you use any customized settings on your ports, be sure to be able to roll-back in case something like this happens.

    Latest Version According to Freshports

In FreeBSD, you have two parts of the operating system: 1.) the base system This is your operating system itself (the kernel, grep, ls, along with other commands and some useful utilities). They are divided into different versions -- e.g. 8.0, 8.1, 8.3, 8-STABLE, 9.0, 9.1, 9-STABLE, 10-CURRENT...

emacs always cannot be at right coordinates in DWM

Try running the same command in the terminal, and see if it has the same problem. Maybe you're using the --geometry flag in a wrong way.

    can't build firefox-21.0_1,1

If you have configured your build with PGO enabled, then you have to change to the root account with su -m. This will make sure that you will be logged in as root and yourself at the same time), otherwise PGO cannot access the X-server to enable those optimizations. There is actually a message...

    lean kernel of 9.1 p3

About that version of my kernel configuration: that week I discovered I had to enable another option in it, in order to be able to boot into the single user mode. If you have the same trouble, enable this in your kernel configuration file: device kbdmux #keyboard multiplexer...

    BSD_pkgs

They may be hated, but they make my laptop run 1.5 hours more without an external power source. Also, they make my laptop 15°C cooler, which is a quite a nice feature. So it's sort of a love/hate relationship.

    BSD_pkgs

Maybe you could also suggest your ideas to GhostBSD and PC-BSD people. They are targeted for more "out-of-the-box-instant-desktop" experience and having such an application could do them a great favor. Just a question, why isn't FreeBSD already a desktop OS? I mean, just because it's not in...

    Forget your love

OK, that's true, my bad for not speaking more clearly. I meant that there is a difference to how long you knew each other and how long you've been dating. If it's been only 3 months or something, then OK. But if it's been 3 years ... then it's probably IMO not a good idea to start hitting on...

    Clang -std=c++11 -stdlib=libc++ Should enable C++ 11

Wow, it's true: clang, clang++ and clang-cpp have the same inode number. In any case, you can try compiling maybe with lang/gcc47. It's the same compiler that Debian uses by default (at least I think it's true for Debian-TESTING). See this document for more info on how to do it properly.

    Are you good at math?

Pardon me for the essay :r. I have to disagree with you. Maybe it is so in the engineering waters, but it's not like that in general. To me the high enough level of mathematical abstraction with time becomes more like philosophy than merely '+' and '-'. What you're talking about is computing...

Signs that you're turning into a "Mad Porter"

Ufff, tell me about it. In my honest opinion, ports are "the greatest thing since sliced bread". I am always impressed how that large collection of Makefiles actually work without conflicting with one another. So far EVERY single thing I installed compiled perfectly (with exception of my...

    Farewell FreeBSD!

Well, I since this thread suddenly became the mockery of the topic "Farewell FreeBSD" :e I'll go one step further, and use it to hail FreeBSD with praise. I am a physics student, I use my computer for numerical simulations that can put my system under a lot of pressure. On Linux, I hated that...

    Forget your love

Same here :e. It might work for an ex-girlfriend, but not for someone you proposed to marry. If you do that, she'll think that you're a jerk, who didn't care about her in the first place, and were only toying with her. Proposal isn't something so trivial. Hahaha, this brings back the...

    Write a portmaster in C

No problem. The C library is very well documented in FreeBSD and on Linux. You could've reached that function by simply checking out the SEE ALSO section of getopt(3). Manpages have sometimes more information than the internet sites (just take the ungrateful complex.h for example), and they're...

    firefox-21.0_1,1 hangs/sleeps when started as non-root

Maybe it had something to do with your configuration flags (maybe with one of the dependencies). If you use plain make to build your ports, try # cd /usr/ports/www/firefox # make all-depends-list to see which dependencies firefox has. If you want to try with default flags for all dependencies...

    firefox-21.0_1,1 hangs/sleeps when started as non-root

After you ran firefox in the terminal you used the '&' in the end of the command, didn't you? You must not do that now, because you don't want it to run in the background -- the information you want will be hidden otherwise. That's why I wrote firefox and not firefox &. Keep that terminal open...
