    Question about installing packages

I'm terribly sorry for confusing you. Do like @SirDice suggested and use the -STABLE package tree, not the -STABLE base system. Your initial guess was correct, '[packages-9-stable]' are the right choice. If you encountered errors, post them here so we can help.

    Question about installing packages

Oh, yikes! It seems that my guess was wrong! Sorry! I guessed so, because he said that packages didn't run, when he changed to 9-STABLE. Why would that be?

    Question about installing packages

It depends on which CPU architecture your system runs on -- i386 or amd64? It has to match your uname -a report, so 9.1-STABLE on i386, goes with .../i386/packages-9-stable/Latest/, which is maybe why it didn't work in some cases (although I didn't have any problems with ports when I upgraded...

    List of Free Science Books

There is also this thing, called the Project Gutenberg, with lots of free books for eReaders, like Kindle for example. It's multilingual, and I would recommend you guys to check it out and to perhaps support this project in your own language. Right now there aren't many books available there...

    portupgrade options

Yeah, I read about the -w option, but as far as I understood, it's still different: portupgrade doesn't save the shared libraries, but it actually preserves them, despite deleting everything else. They are then removed, if the port builds, and is about to be reinstalled. The portmaster(8)...

    portupgrade options

All the functionality that ports-mgmt/portmaster offers is present in ports-mgmt/portupgrade, including backups, with addition that portupgrade preserves shared libraries, so you can run vim for example, while upgrading one of its dependencies. @kr651129, I warmly recommend you to reread the...

    Who gets coder's block?

Yeah, it happens. I usually just write some bullsh!t code for a simple function, so I don't have to call a library (saves cpu time). Usually it's my version of the fabs(3) function # include <stdio.h> double babs (double x) { double re = x; if (re < 0) re *= (-1); return re; }...

Tip on how you can identify a "Microsoft scammer"

Young and innocent as I am, I didn't know what goatse is, so I googled it ... I am shocked and speechless. I hope I'll regain my appetite around lunchtime.

Tip on how you can identify a "Microsoft scammer"

@ShelLuser, the idea also crossed my mind to write a how-to, but my idea is, I think, pointless. I was thinking about writing how to reinstate life to your computer that you just destroyed (software), without resorting to reinstall. So, something went horribly wrong (during a world upgrade...

'make delete-old' breaks local mail delivery with sendmail port

Well, I checked what this /usr/sbin/sendmail actually is. As I suspected, command file /usr/sbin/sendmail reveals it's a soft link to a non-existing /usr/sbin/mailwrapper, so I'm pretty sure you can delete it. It should be removed with yes | make delete-old, but I guess the developers overlooked...

Can I use 4.9/4.8 versions of GCC to rebuild the world/kernel?

I think world builds fine. I was using lang/gcc48 a few months ago for both world and ports and I didn't find any problems with world, but some ports didn't build, so for those specific ports I had to use the default gcc-4.2 compiler. Also, I think world builds fine with some pretty good...

    The ports system is broken

Yes, of course, that's why knowing your make.conf is of vital importance. Your configuration files are improperly written. I hate to repeat myself, but because make.conf is just another make-file.

    Subversion upgrade problem...

You could always rm -rf /usr/ports svn co svn://svn.freebsd.org/ports/head /usr/ports and see what happens.

    Bluetooth mouse problem

Aha, ok. In that case, can you show your /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Maybe rerun # Xorg -configure with your mouse plugged in, and then compare which hardware was detected in /root/xorg.conf.new and in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

    xawtv does not build

If you want to tweak the sources, why don't you just create a patch file, and put it with the other patches in /usr/ports/some/port/files? They will be automatically applied in alphabetical order. That way your changes to the sources will also be automatically applied with make install clean. I...

    The ports system is broken

One of your configuration files is improperly written. Post your make.conf, so we can see if the problem lies there, and any other files you edited prior to this problem (maybe portsnap.conf). Also, maybe you edited files in /usr/ports/Mk directory. If you had, show us. It could be that you set...

More info on the info being collected.

Well, it's like they say, the governments are indeed afraid of their people. But it's a contradiction It is an agency, that by law, operates outside the boundaries of law.
