    Adding Kernel Options

I think you have to modify the sources themselves. You should familiarize yourself with them, and start by reading the FreeBSD Developer's Handbook. Needless to say, don't do this on your machine, or all Hell may break loose, so do these changes and test on a virtual machine (like...

Vim upgrade to 7.3.1276 - no gui and no make config

You're right ... in any case, try updating your ports tree again -- there is another version now, vim-7.3.1276_1, although it still doesn't show anything when you call make config. Still, it installs gvim automatically. If you cannot see it, just use rehash after update. Unfortunatelly for you...

Increasing the bureucratic efficiency, by decreasing the level of bureaucracy

It doesn't matter! I was just interested in your opinions. Thanks for the very instructive reply, which gave me more food for my thought ;). Well, it depends from country to country, but sometime in the 20th century things started to change very fast and the world practically became different...

    Thanks!

I made a switch in October 2012, when someone dared me to install it. I did, and I have tasted the fruit. So far I, everything is perfect in the FreeBSD land, and quality control is on a much higher level than Linux (in my opinion)! Keep up the great work!

    [Solaris] ./do-backup

It would also be nice to know what this do-backup.sh actually is (the contents; you can check them with cat do-backup.sh, or less do-backup.sh, or more do-backup.sh), and if maybe you are the author.

    net/libnet/ doesn't build

OK, in this case you should report this problem to the port maintainer (make -C /usr/ports/net/libnet/ maintainer) and submit a PR. I was looking for the sources, and I stumbled across this, which is also missing low_libnet.h. Closer inspection of the file libnet_link_pf.c would suggest that...

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

May I ask you how exactly did you install your ports? I mean, you are using devel/subversion to keep your ports collection in sync, right? No offense, but are you using methods described in the Handbook, or are you trying something else? Because it's very weird that x11-servers/xorg-server would...

Increasing the bureucratic efficiency, by decreasing the level of bureaucracy

Hello, I would like to share some of my thoughts with you. I hope you won't mind, it's quite "Off-Topic" all right, and I'd like a chance to hear your feedback, or your ideas, and start a debate. We're not in the dawn of the new age anymore, but have quite boldly stepped into it already. Still...

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

So do I: svn info /usr/ports Path: /usr/ports Working Copy Root Path: /usr/ports URL: svn://svn.freebsd.org/ports/head Relative URL: ^/head Repository Root: svn://svn.freebsd.org/ports Repository UUID: 35697150-7ecd-e111-bb59-0022644237b5 Revision: 322146 Node Kind: directory Schedule: normal...

    Of FreeBSD and wireless networking.

Hi! Well, first of all, it would be nice to know which phone you're using. To see if tethering is supported on your phone, you might want to ask the people on freebsd-usb@freebsd.org mailing list, where there were some people mentioning the tethering. They would be able to answer your...

    [Solaris] ./do-backup

Well, since it's in the Off-Topic section, allow me to answer in my broken archaic English: Mayhap these art the druids thou art looking for.

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

But why does the wiki say it is experimental?

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

    I'm sorry, I thought you were using the experimental X.Org, because of the 2nd line in your log file: [ 22.170] X.Org X Server 1.12.4 Release Date: 2012-08-27 [ 22.170] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 22.170] Build Operating System: FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE i386 ... It says you're...

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

As @wblock suggested, one problem is that your X doesn't use the window manager you want. Your 2nd problem is that your hardware isn't properly detected by X. I'm no expert, but I experienced exactly the same problems, when I trying different (wrong) video drivers. This looks suspicious. I am...

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

I was merely suggesting it because of this: I think this adds another different problem. It could be that mouse/keyboard isn't recognized properly by X. Even though the default xorg.conf is pretty good and in most cases correct, it may require a small change, in order to accept the hardware.

How to do a clean reinstall of a port?

You can also "simulate" a clean reinstall of FreeBSD by creating a FreeBSD jail(8) (with this you really simulate a new system), or chroot(8) (that's not really a new system, but I've found it good for debugging). This way you can see how your ports would behave on a clean freshly installed...

Xorg.0.log and dmesg are faultlessly but X gives a black screen only

Maybe you have to modify the xorg.conf a little.

What not-so-common activities/passivities do you enjoy for casual fun?

Well, theories can get even more bizzare :D. According to the mathematician David Hilbert, the world may actually be just one-dimensional, so it would be even less than flat (maybe you could say straight in this case). There is no good physical argument against it, except maybe the rate at which...

    Apache22 install problem

Hi! FreeBSD 8.3 has reached EOL. Please upgrade to 8.4. Not all ports are guaranteed to build on legacy releases.
