all the swap consumed while performing rsync?

This is the most likely reason. However, Bash is slower than Bourne shell though (shouldn't be noticeable most of the time).

Switch to Bourne shell? Can't find a good reason to use Bash.

    Atom and -mtune/-march switch

As a general rule, don't even touch CFLAGS. It's not necessary and breaks stuff. Optimization is already added when using Ports. Setting CPUTYPE should be enough. Sometimes the benefits aren't even noticeable though.

    Ports need stability

Well, it's quite true that Ports can be unstable sometimes, but they've worked pretty well for me. Devs also send head ups before major changes. A "stable" version of Ports would require a lot of work. A part of the infrastructure would have to be changed, so to bring this to reality, someone...

    spam filter doubts?

Can you clarify this a bit? I don't really understand what you're trying to ask. You only need to run sa-update once after each installation. You may optionally run it if you wish to get updated rules though. The rules don't get updated very frequently though. This is because only...

(software synth) MIDI: how to get it working?

Try asking on the freebsd-multimedia@ mailing list. There's a chance that you'll get better responses. By the way, both portmaster and portupgrade support packages as well, so they're not really tailored just for ports (check the -P and -PP options). Portupgrade has supported packages for...

PC-BSD has been around since 2005, so it's not really that young. Ubuntu's first release was in 2004. Whereas Ubuntu was forked from Debian, PC-BSD is a derivative of FreeBSD.

    writing bachelor thesis next year.

Perhaps it might be feasible to create a better installation/management system for packages. Ports work well enough, but packages aren't as easy to use compared to other operating systems. Are there any programs like apt/yum under a BSD license?
