Hi, I've been looking at a few servers recently, and I'd like to know if anyone has experience with these models?

HP ProLiant DL180 G6
HP ProLiant DL360 G6
HP ProLiant DL380 G6
Just want to make sure they work well with FreeBSD.
Take a look at PF and security/sshguard-pf.
While changing the port may be effective, I don't think it's a good solution. Portknocking is better in my opinion (or use SSH keys).
All ports should be compatible with 8.0-RELEASE right now. There is no need to go for -STABLE or 8.1.
Can you try portmaster -rf gedit or the portupgrade equivalent and see if it helps?
I've been using SpamAssassin for quite a while, and I've also tried out bogofilter as well. From what I've seen, the rules for SpamAssassin work well, but bogofilter is way better at Baysesian filtering.

Most projects put the copyright into COPYRIGHT, COPYING, or LICENSE.
Some also put the license into every file.

Well, I think phoenix is right from what I've seen. 2 GB is more than enough for a firewall. A Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad should also be fine (a Xeon processor would probably be a waste of resources).
The server you posted seems to be an overkill for a firewall, so I'd recommend buying a cheaper...
Did you kill the process in the middle of an installation?
Go to rrdtool and do:
# make clean
# make deinstall
# make install clean
If that doesn't help, try:
# make clean
# make FORCE_PKG_REGISTER=1 install clean
