    How to deny attackers

Take a look at PF and security/sshguard-pf. While changing the port may be effective, I don't think it's a good solution. Portknocking is better in my opinion (or use SSH keys).

It should be quite stable as 8.1-RELEASE is quite near.

    problems upgrading gedit

All ports should be compatible with 8.0-RELEASE right now. There is no need to go for -STABLE or 8.1. Can you try portmaster -rf gedit or the portupgrade equivalent and see if it helps?

    Combining SpamAssassin and bogofilter

I've been using SpamAssassin for quite a while, and I've also tried out bogofilter as well. 10Gb/s packet inspection?

Well, I think phoenix is right from what I've seen. 2 GB is more than enough for a firewall. A Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad should also be fine (a Xeon processor would probably be a waste of resources). The server you posted seems to be an overkill for a firewall, so I'd recommend buying a cheaper...

Did you kill the process in the middle of an installation? Go to rrdtool and do: # make clean # make deinstall # make install clean If that doesn't help, try: # make clean # make FORCE_PKG_REGISTER=1 install clean

I hope the OpenSSH devs integrate the HPN patch into the source in the future, but it probably won't happen.

FreeBSD 8 & Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet

Actually, it should work. It's listed in the source: BCOM_DEVICEID_BCM5787M. Have you got the correct module loaded or compiled into your kernel?
