    OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice 3.3 packages

LibreOffice builds faster than OpenOffice.org for some reason on my computer (4 hours and 8 hours, respectively).

    Distributed filesystem

There might not be anyone actively working on a FreeBSD port of GlusterFS any more. FUSE also has bad performance from past experience. Perhaps plain old NFS will do the trick?

Suggest me Open source softwares for these common tasks

A fork of OpenOffice.org, editors/libreoffice, is now available as an alternative.

METIN-2 / METIN2 and other illegal software- don't ask for assistance on these forums.

Yes, it is possible that it will work, but very few people have tested it. It may fail, so make backups before you try. However, as Galactic_Dominator mentioned, it would probably be better to just fix the issue.

Looking for FreeBSD with graphical installer and Gnome

PC-BSD only installs KDE by default for 8.X, but starting with 9.0 it will let users choose between KDE/GNOME/Xfce. PC-BSD 8.X can install GNOME, but it has to be done after the installation. http://wiki.pcbsd.org/index.php/PC-BSD_9.0_TODO

    Which MTA?

I'd go with Postfix as well. I've been using Postfix for over a year (~1000 users with MySQL backend). The good part about Postfix is that it's pretty mature; it has all the features you need. Plus, it is easy to configure. The documentation is pretty good. It rarely has vulnerabilities as...

    ZFS + FreeBSD + virtualbox

If you're not using entire disks, you will probably experience a huge drop in I/O. Using ZFS on the host OS and then UFS inside the guests might be better.

Excellent news! Will this be MFC'd to 8-STABLE once it is stable?

    Java for Firefox 3.6

The Java plugin installed by java/diablo-jre16 doesn't work with Firefox 3.6 anymore. Fortunately, an alternative plugin (IcedTea) can be installed using java/openjdk6. cd /usr/ports/java/openjdk6/ && make config Select WEB (do NOT select IPV6). Note: The IcedTea plugin won't work if both WEB...

How many backups do you own?

For servers I have daily snapshots that will be kept for at least 2~3 years. For my desktop, well... I don't do backups as I don't have an extra hard disk for storing backups. I really should change this though.

PF port forwarding question. Works but seems wrong

There's a workaround to redirect outgoing connections (using route-to I think). I think I saw an example in the PF FAQ or man page.

Is there any Anti-Virus Software for FreeBSD?

ClamAV should be easy enough to install. It isn't as accurate as some commercial AV software though (from my experience).

Username on this forum instead of email in PR

There's no denying that spam is annoying... However, I don't think there will be any effort to hide or obfuscate emails. It seems like a standard way of doing things in the OSS community (look at mailing lists, Git commits, etc.).

    ZFS vs UFS

On one box here with 3x500 GB SATA drives in raidz1 (with 64-bit Xeon and 4 GB RAM), ZFS has faster reads than UFS, but slower writes.

    NO browser will play flash?

There's information about this in the Handbook. Flash works fine for me with Firefox, Chromium, and Opera.

    ZFS vs UFS

About the "ZFS is fast" part... ZFS is slower than UFS when writing to disk on all the servers I have access to (using mirror and raidz1), so I only use ZFS for data storage. However, this varies depending on your hardward and setup. The major benefits of ZFS: snapshots, compression, checksums...

Please give me some suggestion for ZFS

I remember someone (phoenix I think) mentioning that 6~7 drives should be used for the best RAIDZ performance. Something like 2x 6-disk raidz1.

    Upgrading Ancient FreeBSD install

Going from 6.X to 8.X should be quite easy, but for 5.X I've heard the process is quite painful.

How to access FreeBSD svn repository

It should be http://svn.freebsd.org/base/head/usr.bin/. Take the "viewvc" out.

    GNOME 3 support

Try asking on the freebsd-ports@ mailing list. It should be work in progress: http://www.marcuscom.com:8080/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/ports/x11/gnome2/Makefile#rev1.299.
