ZFS Building NAS - Hardware Review?

The recommendations from iX and the FreeNAS forums are to always use ECC. If you are buying new hardware, there is very little reason not to. It is very cheap insurance, especially with the relatively large amounts of RAM used by a NAS. gofer_touch: I have been curious about the X150M Pro ECC...

Other Can't erase microSD after burning FreeBSD on it.

I have little experience with GParted. It has worked for me some times, failed at other times. gpart has a more narrow scope and is better at it. The screenshots I saw showed gpart working. And now I see "virtual machine" in the messages above, which changes the whole game. I would use...

Other Can't erase microSD after burning FreeBSD on it.

Doubtful. I still think it is a GPT/MBR problem.

    Solved Portmaster question

Why would you rebuild all ports before upgrading? Also, don't ever use portmaster -af without reading /usr/ports/UPDATING beforehand. Also also, the entire correct procedure for rebuilding all ports correctly is shown at the end of portmaster. It takes less time than rebuilding them in-place...

Solved Number of created screens does not match Problem

The Intel video on the chip is probably too new for the current drivers. vesa should support it, but that error... It might be possible to use x11-drivers/xf86-video-scfb if that system is UEFI. See https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html.

Other Can't erase microSD after burning FreeBSD on it.

No kidding. That is a tremendous waste of time. Always use at least a bs of 64k. 1M is fine. However, this should not be done on flash media unless necessary. This has changed recently. FreeBSD 11, for instance, is a UEFI or BIOS/MBR boot image. The difficulty sounds like it came from...

Solved How to install FreeBSD onto an extended partition.

I suppose "stop using MBR" is not an option? It should be possible to manually create the extended slice, create the BSDlabel partitions inside it, mount it all, set the shell variable that points to it, then continue the installer. That last part is covered in the man page for the installer...

    IPF Roku and MAC address

IPF? Really? Anyway... does the Roku have any provision for a static IP address?

    Solved Housekeeping /tmp

I used to do that, too, but it's easy to lose things. It's like storing important documents in a trash can: sure, it works, but it only has to go wrong once...

    System monitoring

Actually, it can be several different ways. For hosts that might or might not be up or accessible at any time (remote Windows systems, in my case), there is a way to configure it so those systems report their status rather than being polled. Very few modern setups are really just one or two...

    Solved Housekeeping /tmp

Use tmpfs. Not only is it faster and more efficient than a drive-based directory, it self-clears when the machine is reset or powered off.

    Other Seagate 8TB ST8000VN0002 works?

The "archive" drives are the shingled drives, the NAS drives are, as far as I know, normal drives. Although possibly with a gooey filling of helium. Should still be detected as a device and be possible to run SMART tests on it if it works at all.

    TFTPD server woes

If the idea is "I need to share files from my server on the internet", TFTP is not the answer. TFTP is the less-secure alternative to FTP, which is already bad enough. It's not clear at all which type of files are being shared. Certainly there is no lack of protocols that are faster and more...

    System monitoring

Depends on what is being checked and also your perspective, but I would say it's mostly pull, as in the server collects data from the monitored systems at intervals. For basic connectivity like responding to pings, it polls the monitored systems. If you install a package on the monitored...

    Multiboot Windows10/FreeBSD-11

There are some misunderstandings here. Windows 10 installs are mostly on newer computers with UEFI. If it has UEFI, it has GPT partitioning. boot0 will not work on that at all. It can't, it doesn't know how to deal with a partition format that came along something like twenty years later...

    Replacing realtek "re" driver

Not mini-PCIE, but full-sized, normal PCIE. The em and igb drivers support everything I've tried, which admittedly isn't a huge variety. Recently, that has been i217V, I219, and I210. Come to think of it, mini-PCIE boards should work, it's just a different form factor. But a software...
