    What *is* "error 19" ?

This is a GEOM system. If there are volume/filesystem labels, it will show them in /dev. There are numerous versions of NTFS, maybe some put the volume name information elsewhere and the label system doesn't see it. Generic labels are assigned manually. Persistent ones are written to the...

    What *is* "error 19" ?

The glabel system automatically uses volume labels from a bunch of different filesystems, see the man page. The problem with using actual generic labels is that they create metadata at the end of the volume or device, and if you don't access that device through the label, that metadata can be...

Newbie and Xfce ... things wrong in documentation?

Slim is a separate matter from xfce. As are other login managers like gdm. I see people fighting with them, and kind of recall fighting with Slim myself at some point. Now I use startx, which really just runs startxfce4 --with-ck-launch.

    What *is* "error 19" ?

See errno. Error 19 is ENODEV, "operation not supported by device", but what it usually means in the loader is "device not found". The way to avoid this is to not use static device names like /dev/ada0, but labels. Labels can be assigned to a particular device and stay with that device...

    Improving TrueOS: OpenRC

OpenRC works, it's like a more polished version of rc.d. The worst thing about it is that they called something "runlevels" which is unrelated to the SysV stuff. But it misleadingly implies it and is the first thing anyone hearing it thinks. If they changed that stupid name, it would be a...

    Disk setup

That only works if the computer boots in UEFI mode, and there are a lot of BIOS-booting computers still around. Some UEFI computers do not like having a freebsd-boot partition, even when booting in UEFI. I've seen this on Dell notebooks.

Problem to get keyboard properly working.

"Media" keys are typically a separate USB device. Look for a "uhid" entry (human interface device). As to how to make them work... don't know.

    Upgrading from 10.3 to 12

12 is on the Subversion sites, but it is called "head" until it is released. Likewise with freebsd-update, it won't be available that way until release. If you're not comfortable with building from source, running head is probably going to be uncomfortable.

    Solved systemd alternative on FreeBSD

TrueOS is having good success with OpenRC. Joe Maloney gave a presentation about it at KnoxBUG, and I suspect he'll be at BSDCan. It's mostly compatible with the current rc system, but scripts are mostly simpler and it can be a lot simpler while still providing more features and speed.

Solved UFS2 mounted as UFS1 = fs corruption?

Yes, OpenBSD UFS is different from FreeBSD UFS. I don't think it's just a version difference.

Backing up Windows drive using dd

If set to a file, the output goes to a file. Likely a huge file, depending on the input. It can be piped through gzip for compression: dd if=/dev/ada0s2 bs=1M | gzip > /home/storage/corrupt-win-nt-fs.gz (Untested.)

Backing up Windows drive using dd

Yes. Of course, it will copy every block in the partition, not just used ones, but there is no way to get around that now. Give it a decent buffer size to speed up copying.

    printing text to network printer

That's an Okidata impact printer connected by parallel port to the print server? I've dealt with those. There is some weird interface or timing issue. At the time, I had to change either a DIP switch setting on the printer or something on the print server to get it to work properly. Dim...

How to search forums for "ping" without finding "hoping"?

Sure. But this generally gives the same results as without quotes. Click Tools then the "All Results" dropdown, which lets you choose Verbatim.

How to avoid the ".. is already installed" errors

That advice came from 2006. And even then it said "...there is no reason to mess with this file."

How to search forums for "ping" without finding "hoping"?

Google does this too. Putting quotes around terms no longer helps. If you look carefully, you can find a "verbatim" option under their options which will finally actually search for what you asked.

Solved Mounting external USB3 HDD problems

I semi-regularly use an external USB3 Western Digital hard drive with at least two FreeBSD 11 systems and one FreeBSD 10 system. I have also installed FreeBSD to a USB3 stick and run from it. Other than an initial slow boot, it works surprisingly well. Mounting the system on a memory disk...
