    200 MB RAM FreeBSD Desktop

Moore's law: hardware capabilities doubles all 18 months. Gates law: software performance halves all 12 months.

    200 MB RAM FreeBSD Desktop

Just faced the fact that pkg will eat memory like popcorn, even on the console it is paging now :) 258MB and counting. Trying it in CDE got xosview away.

    200 MB RAM FreeBSD Desktop

Standard install of 15.0, standard XOrg, ... Usability is "OK" with 200MB in the virtual box setup. Going back to some GB now as this is supposed a build machine later on (8 cores assigned).

Solved How realistic are my goals?

This is one core point. You might, family situation allowing, change your place to live to some other which allows you to have decent living on what you have as a pension.

    200 MB RAM FreeBSD Desktop

Classic MacOS (the old Macintosh) could run word in 128KB. But that was old Word, as "not Text". My first Unix on my own HW had 8MB memory and ran fvwm2, good memories.

No, you will welcome the heating capacity. It will not make a dent into the Blockchain, so that can't be the reason to put it to work on crypto.

    What about gaming on FreeBSD?

My nwndata is at 1.29_3, the rest should be the same as yours. Illegal instruction. I'll check with core dumps and debugging later. I had, after applying the patch, run a "make makesums" as the checksums were not matching. Running 15-stable, btw.

Is the High Price of RAM a Good Opportunity to Promote FreeBSD?

Normally, the performance of modern CPUs can offset the reduction in needed bandwith. I once ran the test, where the total time for reading/writing was about equal. What was used up in the compression/decompression was gained by shorter I/O. That was some 20 years ago, I think today you have an...

    What about gaming on FreeBSD?

OK, tried the port. When I directly call the nwmain, I get the missing .so error. When I use the start script it crashes with an "illegal instruction", when the core dumps are enabled there is one from "SDLAudio", I seem to remember. I'll try and merge my CD installation with that one, maybe...

GNOME & Firefox officially brain dead.

Once upon a time I pasted a big hexdump into an irc channel by mistake. I got banned after that 😂 And it totally works in terminals, but they sometimes have guards against that.

GNOME & Firefox officially brain dead.

I threw in CDE because it is way too old to be dependent on active patents, it is not a "cool thing to leave your mark on" (says the dog to the new fence), and it is STABLE. No more features added? Fine. Less breakage, less maintainance. Who wants KDE or Gnome can do that, but when someone...

    What about gaming on FreeBSD?

Oh, there is a Linux binary. And when you start it - it fails due to missing libmss.so.6 😭

    What about gaming on FreeBSD?

I tried wine-proton, same problem. The start up blink vid plays, with sound, and then it keels over. Since wine-proton adds more than one GB to the system, I consider using a VM running XP got such games. Or maybe some other trick reveals itself... Maybe build wine without alsa?

GNOME & Firefox officially brain dead.

Once CDE finds the other displays and can use them, I vote for having CDE as the default desktop in FreeBSD base install - should we need one. Interesting how the bloat from the past (compared to hand-tuned fvwm2) is now the slim one and the slim one turns into a swamp...

GNOME & Firefox officially brain dead.

Using ctrl-c to copy some code from a program running in a terminal might give you unintended consequences. They never tried this, as everything is surely GUI only, is it not? And yes, I use MMB in the console _a_lot_. MS had the habit of mis-using existing standards. Like the .doc ending for...
