It does indeed look like your NIC isn't being detected (plip0 is parallel port)
What's the output of dmesg | grep -i ethernet?
Ignore the /etc/rc.conf for the moment, that can get configured later.

For starters you'll probably want to post the contents of /etc/rc.conf cat /etc/rc.conf and the output of ifconfig.
Anyone looking at this can then determine if your card is being detected and whether the relevant settings are correct in /etc/rc.conf

Regain free space on / by removing *.symbols in your kernel directory
rm -rf /boot/kernel/*.symbols
If 'mpd' exists in master.passwd you could delete the entry and then
cap_mkdb /etc/master.passwd
before [re]installing mpd again.
I reckon you'll have to make your own mind up on that one. However, do bear in mind that pretty much all of the DM's have "lite" versions where you can install a sensible base and then add additional parts as/if needed. KDEMultimedia/KDEdevelop/KDEnetwork as examples.

If I set VDPAU as video out my cpu usage goes right down as expected, video renders superbly etc.
However this is only good in the video's native size ie 1280x720 if I try and fullscreen the video my computer instantly restarts..
