pkg_add cares about dependencies when used without '-r', unlike dpkg which is a great PITA when you want to add some .deb files which fly around on your hard drive... (sorry for ranting and being off-topic).
...Any work on improving ports and/or packages would be valuable.
I've often thought of trying to port/adapt debian's APT to FreeBSD. It should be possible to implement it along side the existing ports and packages infrastructure in the same way that it works along side debian's dpkg...
