I read half the article and still have no idea what labwc is. So pointless to continue reading some "philosophy" about something I don't even know what it is.
labwc is a very good drop in replacement for openbox for wayland. It's good enough so that you can just put your openbox rc.xml in, and while there will be error messages, it will work, along with most of your custom shortcuts. I glanced over that philosophy statment, and while it sounds good, it's easy enough for one person to do something that others will consider a violation of it and it just becomes a part of it. Shucks, google once said don't be evil. (That phrase was supposedly created by a woman who went to Yahoo, with some absurd salary, told everyone no more remote work, then said, see, I'm coming in and I built a nursery for my baby out of my own funds.)
Will labwc find a panel like Openbox had with tint2, without "layer-shell" dependencies? Until now I have not found anything in the repositories, except for hs-xmobar, which claims to be Wayland-compatible in text-only output mode, though I still need to look for configuration examples...
Right now I just use waybar. However, I don't use labwc very often and I don't find it as convenient as tint2. There's a few bars around, but I've not looked into them. The xmobar.org listed on freshports is just a betting site, though the Arch wiki has page on its configuration. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xmobar
Another option is sfwbar. Alas , takes some trial and error finding and settling on a "stable" wayland stack. It's just how it is, things are in transition.
I've used sfwbar too. At one point, playing with a lighter window manager on RHEL10, I used labwc as window manager and sfwbar as the bar--I chose it because it was one of the easier bars to get working on RHEL10, taking a Fedora srpm and building the rpm. Never one to turn down a chance to blow my own horn, I wrote down the procedure at https://srobb.net/rhel10.html for anyone who wants to try RHEL10 and wants a lighter window manager. Just to mention, in case it affects anyone, I wasn't able to get an IME working with that setup, but for standard everyday stuff, it was fine.
