Ok, now there is BSDnas and FreeCORE. This should be interesting. Or not.
For me, the migration away from TrueNAS CORE is Ansible roles all the way! Node bootstrapping, patching, security, OS tuning, administrators, network configuration, services, zfs snapshotting & replication, virtualization, monitoring, etc. Quite a lot of work for sure, still ongoing at a leisurely pace, but the end result will be a vanilla FreeBSD deployment not just fully featured with all my TrueNAS CORE hosted workloads, but also one that I can fully and deterministically manage to my heart's content via IaC Ansible recipes and/or standard OS tooling, without ending up again in the dead-end of the "turn key" appliance approach of a project that still has a lot of growing pains and manpower demands in front of it.
I have nothing but the best wishes for all of them, and I truly hope they succeed, reach some kind of a common ground, collaborate between them, etc. But, even with that being the case, I'd still much prefer something like Sylve if I ever went the GUI route again, because, at least as far as I understand, Sylve doesn't fully take the OS administrator role away from me and hand it over to a custom database, which is one thing that can leave you out in the cold should the project go under in the future.
