Most expensive laptops

I think I'd take the P16, but without the nvidia graphics, and I'm not sure about a 4K screen in 16", it's probably overkill and a lower resolution panel might be better. I wouldn't be bothered about touch screen either. The base model P16 might not be too bad.

And at the other end of the price scale, one of these T490's makes a nice freebsd box :)

In UK currency they go for around 180 - 350 pounds, but there are lots on the market, you can usually pick up a good one at the lower end of that range. My own one has a manufacturing date of 03/20, 16GB ram, i5 cpu, and cost me 170 british pounds, for example (including delivery). Mine is the base model, I don't have an additional GPU over the intel integrated one. IMHO the base models are the best ones to get, with the least software compatibility problems.

You can put the ram up to 40GB and put a 1 TB nvme ssd in it. The only thing I don't like on mine is the base of the machine gets a bit too warm when it's actually on my lap; my X220 is cooler, but older generation. The X220 seems to have developed something of a cult following, they are quite expensive now for one in good condition, here at least.

The main thing I don't like about these later generation thinkpads is they are not so easy to disassemble or replace parts as on the classic thinkpads. Taking the T490 apart is a bit of a pain, you have to be very careful not to break fragile plastic clips or to strip threads when tightening the screws on the back. That seems to apply to all modern laptops, but it's a shame they are not as repairable as the older thinkpads, which were much easier to work on. It's generally a cheaper build too than the classic thinkpads.

No way I would touch any of those overstuffed, overengineerd pieces. (except the Apple ones which are expensive without any more engineering :))

Except maybe for competitive eSports in a hotel somewhere.

The very large screens on some of these are also useful for CAD (computer aided design). That also needs lots of CPU and memory. In the past, before fast internet connections, some scientists / engineers / designers needed such machines to take work home.

I always try to get one for an acceptable price in ebay.
But with i7 processor, the other do not have USB 3.
I like it because of the keyboard.
If you can find an X220 in good condition, it still makes a nice freebsd box. In my X220 I have 16GB RAM, 1TB sata SSD and 1TB msata ssd in the msata slot, so 2TB total storage. Of course X220 is the last one with the classic thinkpad keyboard and the thinklight. X220 keyboard is very nice. The T490 has the new type keyboard, its OK but not as good as the classic keyboard. And T490 has a keyboard backlight, but I prefer the thinklight.

However, T490 has much more modern semiconductors ... you can put 40GB total RAM...nvme ssd... and the integrated GPU can play higher video frame rates than the older chipsets. Carbon X1 is also an option now, but I think T480/490 is currently around the best value for money, in uk at least. Of course you must search for a good one and not pay too much. :)

Side by side: X220 on left, T490 on right. Of course the X220 design and ergonomics are far superior, a much better keyboard and layout, and we don't have the stupid huge touchpad (why??!) of the T490, which I never use anyway, I always use the trackpoint. But the T490 has a more modern cpu, much larger RAM and nvme, faster wifi, etc, everything is more modern than X220. So its difficult to choose! Both of them make good freebsd machines.:)

I used till now a Samsung nc10 (Atom N270, 2 GB RAM). Not anymore usable because of web browser.
An X220 is under these conditions a supercomputer. Perhaps almost as portable as the nc10.
NC10 is nice, I also had that one, but I think atom is too low powered now, too slow, and the memory is too small. But the keyboard is quite nice on NC10, and I liked the small size.

Most expensive laptops ... are the ones that you literally can not buy.

Show me an offer to buy ThinkPad 25th Anniversary Edition (known also as T25) ... even used one ... or a modified ThinkPad T480 with ThinkPad T25 keyboard (known as FrankenPad T25) ... nowhere. Zero. Nada. Gone.

Also very rare... I remember X62 (!!)
It's very special :)

Sadly, seems https://www.51nb.com/ does not exist now. I'm still hoping for a motherboard upgrade for X220 or X201!
