How to shut screen off without a DE, on xorg?

On Linux I would do
sudo vbetool dpms off

vbetool also exists in freebsd, but needs enabling linux stuff. Is there something native?

I havn't tried, but this should do it.
xset(1)
x11/xset

       [+dpms] [-dpms]
            [dpms _s_t_a_n_d_b_y [ _s_u_s_p_e_n_d [ _o_f_f]]]
            [dpms force {standby|suspend|off|on}]

You can use xrandr()
For example, I turn off the laptop screen with the command:

xrandr --output LVDS-1 --off

I have a script with the following inside that I run when I want to blank the screen:

xset dpms force off
