Coming soon: Hyprland Premium accounts

Hyprland, one of the better known Wayland compositor window managers, is introducing new ways of getting some money in. Instead of though just asking for donastions the developers choose an open core approach.

So soon there will be the Hyprland premium account, which will give you access to certain stuff like premium forum and premium desktop experience, whatever this will mean.

Many users are not against the idea of paying for support, but dislike the idea of having features hidden behind a payment potentially breaking their desktop experience.

Asked about what this means the Hyprland developer remains cryptic, saying "premium dot files."

In the modern world, nothing surprises anyone anymore.
They wrote online that the developers there are overly acidic. So, predictable behavior.
And the guys there also want to eat. Unless a major player, like Canonical, sees a prospect -
may well and generously donate to the 'hyper' developers. We'll see.
At least, 'hyper' remains a loyal technology for me.
But if something similar happens with 'sway', then I don't even know.
I think that 'Fedora' or 'SUSE' can deduct some donation to the 'sway' developers or transfer something else.
Companies of this kind have much more money. It won't be difficult for them to donate.
I don't know exactly what kind of informal and monetary relations there are.
Just guesses and only guesses...

I just unstarred their GitHub repo for using a BSD license and charging people. What does the C++ community say. Should they do a paywall? Its only 3 years old. The software they built

This guy is following me all over the forum. Yikes. And I was here before you on the forum. But to answer the question, Meta's foundation was built from those who developed the PHP programming language.

Your recent posts make absolutely no sense, were you hacked? :D

Things like Hyprland are clearly doing well due to the fact that the ecosystem is still quite new and there isn't much competition between compositors (and due to the architecture, might never be). So I see this as a speculative "lets earn a bit of cash!".

They are absolutely allowed but its a bit cringy and suggests that the developers are quite young so never really saw the open-source world in its hayday and so never learned the etiquette. "You make cool software I use, so I make cool software for you to use". Would be quite funny if all their own dependencies started asking them for money (compilers, build systems, middleware).

But at the same time, I feel a "premium" community offering isn't a bad idea if monetization *needs* to be done. It keeps out some low-effort noise and makes sure that those really engaged with the software have the most input.

This thread has piqued my interest in hyperland. I might well try it out.

Freebsd is free. The ports are free. It is a pity my supermicro workstation was not free.

The author of Hyprland made an official statement on Reddit about what's going on.

Hey hey people, vax here.

I've seen the post about Hyprland Premium go a bit viral and people don't seem to understand fully what we're doing.

There is a reason no pages link to the account. subdomain, because it's a work in progress, after all. That's why wording is a bit lacking, that's why registrations are closed.

Anyways, here are some key takeaways:

Yes, it's real

It's the official website. I did not get hacked.

Hyprland is not going closed source

It says that in the first sentence on the page. No paid features, beta branches, etc. We continue development as always.

Why money

I need something to eat too. Once I end university, if I can't make this my full-time job, I will have to severely decrease my contributions in favor of a real job. If this gets us somewhere, it will be only with benefits to you, the users. If I get enough money to hire another guy to help me work on Hyprland full time, I will.

Forums:

Already on forum.hypr.land. To log in, you need a Hyprland Account, that's why we haven't "fully" launched them yet.

"Premium" Forums:

Additional categories on the same forum for premium subscribers - these include premium support (where you get answers from me instead of the community at large), Q&A with me, and some banter chats.

Desktop Experience:

Free desktop experience: Dotfiles provided by us, with one-click installs and updates.

Premium desktop experience: Same as above, but with more customization options. (dotfile customizations, e.g. "bar on what side", "what button where", etc, not Hyprland features)

"Further premium services":

A general catch-all clause if any premium services come out in the future, they will most likely just be a part of the premium subscription. This might be dotfile sync, or other ideas. We don't know yet, that's why we didn't say.

Cheers, happy Hyprlanding.
