XFCE "mixer" applet not functioning

I have an emu_10k1 sound card. I installed it using the handbook, and it functions correctly. I can listen to music in Audacious. I cannot, however, adjust the volume.

When I right-click/properties under "Sound card" it shows "Unknown (OSS Mixer)"

How can I correct this?

Ok, actually I CAN adjust the volume with the applet. I would just like to know why it is grayed out and does not recognize my card.

I did that, and it does function. It just appears grayed out on the panel with a small red box with an X.

I am just wondering why it does not recognize the card. I took out a newer card and put in this older SB Live! card specifically because the handbook mentioned that FreeBSD supports the emu_10k1 based cards.

The button to the left? That's a mute button. Click it to turn it off.

Edit: there should be a speaker icon on that button, but may not be unless you have added icons or chosen a different icon theme. For some reason, xfce 4.10 either is missing a default icon theme, or it's been moved or ...something.
