It's been a while but from the top of my head; mount -t tarfs /path/to/tar/file.tgz /mnt
Keep in mind that it'll be read-only, you cannot write to a tarfs(5) filesystem. Back in the olden days, the second boot floppy contained a compressed MFS root filesystem, it was mounted using tarfs(5).
