Xorg failed to compile keymap

14-5 STABLE
nvidia-driver-595.014.02
Nvidia RTX 5060
---------------------------------------
I have gone through many variants of xorg.conf, having no xorg.conf, etc and the latest
xorg.conf from nvidia support AI chat still having Xorg load a frozen pointer and after a
few seconds revert to a black screen [ hard reset necc ], the Xorg logs -- the recent ones --
inform of a failed keyboard initialization [ although that may happen before, rather than
despite, the black screen -- which remains to be seen ] ..
------------------
(EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/local/share/X11/xkb/rules/base
which seems to exist as a symlink by the way.
-----------------
(EE) XKB: Failed to load keymap. Using default keymap instead.
then it repeats
(EE)XKB: Couldn't open rules files /usr/local/share/X11/rules/base
XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup.
---------------------
[EE]
Fatal server error:
[EE] Failed to activate virtual core keyboard: 2(EE)
(EE)

Anyone who has run into this same problem and/or has the same card and has more expertise
than I in working toward a resolution?
--------------------
The card works out of the box on OpenBSD by the way. I do not recall its default window manager... and
would like to continue with geting Freebsd working.

Thanks in advance.
-------------------------------
I forgot to mention -- one of the past xorg.conf's had a setting to disable
the ryzen-embedded radeon which I think may mean xorg's detection of that
video type may incur breakage of the nvidia -- xorg one. And the setting [ which
I do not recall specifically, or even if it was set outside the xorg.conf ]
did not work at the time.

Trying to resolve this still in my spare time. I run into well-written [ per webpage
responses ] wayland setup guides [for Linux] and wonder if some documentation
details how to switch wholly from Xorg to Wayland if just a discrete desktop card
[ nvidia RTX ] is installed ** . I came across the following terms

In case wayland would suffice for the use cases I currently have in mind.

nvidia-modeset; nvidia_modeset
nvidia drm
udev
EnableGpuFirmware

But suppose that several should be excluded, setup in a particular way,
and removed or ignored in some fashion to start wayland without Xorg.
Is there a non-laptop guide already existing, I wonder?

To answer that last question, STILL AS ONE INEXPERIENCED

1... a forum thread here exists on that very topic.
2... github -- freebsd handbook -- chapter 6 wayland including compositors
3... nvidia documentation ch 39 and ch 40 xwayland setup
4... freedesktop ORG extensive guide to setting up wayland
-------------------
I hope to eventually get the nvidia-driver usable on ryzen and blackwell Nvidia RTX 5060 with Xorg however. [ persistent frozen mouse pointer reverts to reboot needed black
screen within a few seconds ]
--------------------
and failing that begin the Xwayland adventure.

For RTX 5xxx (Blackwell generation of architectures), AS MULTIPLE POSTS HERE AND THERE SUGGESTS (by me, and by others), loading GSP (GPU System Processor) firmware is mandatory to work (GPU firmwares should be incorporated in large nvidia.ko) by putting hw.nvidia.registry.EnableGpuFirmware=1 in your /boot/loader.conf.

For others (unrelated with NVIDIA GPU drivers), how did you installed Xorg?
Just let something like KDE to automatically pull in?
Specifically installed x11/xorg or x11/xorg-minimal? If so, via pkg or locally built via ports?

Anyway, seemingly your installation is somehow broken.
Existence of symlink is NOT sufficient. What's important here is that the symlink can be followed through actual target file or not.

It seems to be an xorg-minimal, not specifically installed... That setting is in
/boor/loader.conf . Next, I will install the full xorg next to see it the issue resolves.
