Slow Download Speeds in FreeBSD

Hello FreeBSD Forum,

This is my second attempt at installing FreeBSD, and I'm experiencing very slow download speeds for packages. Both attempts were conducted within a virtual machine (VM).

Interestingly, when I tried GhostBSD (also in a VM), the download speeds were significantly better, often reaching around 10 MiB/s for most files.

I've tried all available FreeBSD mirror servers, including using the fastest_pkg Python script to find the fastest ones. However, the speeds remain slow in FreeBSD.

I am located in North Africa, and based on my internet service provider (ISP), European servers, particularly those in Germany and the UK, tend to perform best for me.

Any suggestions on how to improve package download speeds in FreeBSD for my location would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have attached some screenshots showing the issue.

try to use below repos :
Code:
FreeBSD: {

#every time update packages
#url: "pkg+[URL]https://pkg.freebsd.org/$[/URL]{ABI}/latest",

#3month update packages
url: "pkg+[URL]https://pkg.freebsd.org/$[/URL]{ABI}/quarterly",
  mirror_type: "srv",
  signature_type: "fingerprints",
  fingerprints: "/usr/share/keys/pkg",
  enabled: yes
}
maybe fast your.

Hey thanks for your answers already change mirrors, all of them seem super slow max speed is 400kbps at the best even tried fastest_pkg python script same result.

The whole time, my average speed was at best below 50 KB/s. In many times, it dropped to 20 KB/s. :) Now I've switched my internet provider, and it's over 200 KB/s—I'm really happy with it! :)

donsmak :
yeah, in my location. some time the speed was 120kbps. some time was fast 1.2Mbps. not always. most time was 200kbps.

unfortunately this has been an issue for quite some years, at least in Europe (Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Denmark and Finland in my case). I have experienced slow speeds in various datacenters, and before someone chimes in - it's not the datacenters connections, Linux package updates are blazingly fast.

Sorry, I didn't fully read your original post before replying the first time.

Please respond to SirDice above regarding the network adapter chosen for your VM.

It would be useful to see if your hypervisor suffers the same delays as your VM. Are you able to test the FreeBSD VM download/upload speeds, e.g. just use wget(1) to fetch something off the Internet. Then do the same from your hypervisor. Report the download speeds in both cases.
