personal blog platform recommendation

I know people are really down on AI and I can see that. But this is a question you could literally dump into any AI prompt and get excellent suggestions (especially if you add whether you're willing to pay or not). Gemini and Copilot give plenty to work with.

I am a little hyped about Joomla! (www/joomla6); a CMS system which supports almost everything: website (can even handle multiple if needed), blogs, user account management (2FA, passkeys, captcha's, etc.) and the best part (in my opinion!) => it's a lot less 'commercial' than WordPress.

Sure, there are also extensions which you can rent (and sometimes buy), but many of those merely extend on already supported features. Right now I've been using Joomla! for a few weeks now (I'm reviving an old ASP website from 12 or so years ago) and it's still fully vanilla. Works like a charm. Themes may seem tricky but are honestly not too excessive. I find it much easier to use CSS for custom layouts than with WordPress where you almost have to dig through dozens of menus before you reach these parts.

What I like best is how everything in Joomla is an 'article'. So it could be part of your blog, but with the same ease you can turn it into a generic webpage.

And probably needless to say: runs perfectly on FreeBSD. Better yet: it doesn't enforce MySQL either (I prefer Postgres).

cracauer@ gave the correct answer. But then again, reading “I can’t self-host” (yes you can), you might or might not be interested in Substack.
i meant i can self-host idk why i said i cant

i agree and did search already and tested different tools but just trying to get more suggestions , nothing wrong about that , none of what i tried till now clicked with me

i not willing to pay (or use closed source tool) and i want to be able to self-host (i made mistake in post)

I used to use Pelican, but it broke too often (probably my fault). Now I use Nikola, it doesn't break too often. I run Nikola on my workstation, and deploy with git to my self-hosted server (a vm on bhyve, actually): http://tingo.homedns.org/posts/deployment-with-nikola/
Only static files on my web server, easy to use (well for me anyway), and I can also write content remotely by ssh'ing into my workstation.
Why bhyve not jail

Any reasons why not WordPress?
The most cracked CMS of them all--though that's due to most usage, too.

I hate all the CMSes. There are a few now that I could recommend, if I remembered what they were, but I still wouldn't use them cause, eventually, there's something they can't do or they do it poorly. But I prefer to build my furniture with an axe so there's that.

1+ for m4(1). I've used m4(1) during the pandemic to build an automated website for the kid, it worked wonderfully but for just straight-up content you want to type (like: blog) you already have a pretty powerful rendering tool in mandoc(1) at your disposal.

For example, I made the following (link below) in about 30 minutes (from idea -> completion) with nothing more than markdown. Since then Ive modified my md2mdoc utility quite a bit so step. #5 could be simplified a lot. NOTE: Also, I stopped updating my public repo but I believe I pushed quite a bit of those modifications so the utility should be more than useful for something as simple as static webpages (and it could be used in a on-the-fly scenario like you could with an m4(1) setup).

Been there, done that, but sometimes it still gives a warm feeling that someone else does the heavy lifting for me.

Ah, getting old. Not for sissies.

I will be very sad if the FreeBSD forums get replaced with an AI prompt at some point. I'll be like "Oh mannnn...."

EDIT: Actually I would say "Oh fiddlesticks."
