Solved Mounting external USB3 HDD problems

Hello,

I recently installed and running FreeBSD 9.1 through NAS4Free. It's been running for couple of months and I want to add an external 4TB Seagate Freeagent HDD using USB3. The motherboard does have 2 USB3 ports. When I connect it, I see error messages and am not able to mount it. Here is output from dmesg:
Code:
ugen5.2: <Unknown> at usbus5 (disconnected)

Sorry, I mean, I have the same problem with a WD My Passport (2Tb 2 TB) and it is recognized only if it is there during booting, not if I plug it in afterwards.

Well, I think this is a FreeBSD issue, since I installed a plain FreeBSD 9.1 for i386 in my laptop, with a generic kernel and anything else just as it comes out of the box...

May I suggest to remove the "NAS4Free" part from the title of the thread, to see if we can attract more feedback to solve this problem?

There are known issues with some USB3 controllers on 9.1. Later code (i.e. 9-STABLE) has fixes/improvements for some chipsets. See this earlier thread for a discussion about similar problems (but look how much more detailed information the original poster provided than in this thread).

I have exactly the same problem here. The disk is a WD My Passport 1 TB (USB 3.0, WDC WD10TMVW-11ZSMS5).

The system is running
Code:
9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 724)
.

If I connect the WD My Password after system powers up, I'll get the same error log which is exactly the same as what @shutdown_now posted. If the external USB HDD is connected before powering up, nothing wrong with either the detection of USB HDD or using it.

I have a similar problem with NAS4Free with and embedded N4F installed on the IDE drive channel. It works and boots just fine until I shut down and add a drive to ANY of the SATA slots.

So I 'd make a suggestion that this is not necessarily a USB only issue, but adding any drive to any port.

My installation hangs at
Code:
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md0 []...

No further movement , I can leave it like that for hours and boot does not progress.

Often have to shutdown and reboot two to three times with the new drive fitted before it gets passed this 'hang'.

I semi-regularly use an external USB3 Western Digital hard drive with at least two FreeBSD 11 systems and one FreeBSD 10 system. I have also installed FreeBSD to a USB3 stick and run from it. Other than an initial slow boot, it works surprisingly well.

Mounting the system on a memory disk (ufs:/dev/md0) is a customization that has been done by the NAS4Free project. That is the first place to ask. Have you checked with their forums or mailing lists?

Yes, asked multiple times on the NAS4Free forum, I did not state that in this post or link to it..sorry..I did read that rule in the Forum rules.

But no joy ...no replies to any of my questions over there. So I tried elsewhere...but the 'problem' has not rectified itself.. I figured it out to be a hardware issue in this case..there just must be something up with the board.. too many random non repeatable faults ..and freezes / hangs etc.

So the machine has been stripped of RAM/ HDD/ fans etc and dumped.

Mac Pro 1.1. 2006 with twin Duo Core 2.66 Xeons

Tried an instal on my everyday Mac Pro, a 2008 Mac Pro 3.1, and all was good and stable, all worked well, installed and worked in minutes where the 1.1MP would crash / freeze hang etc

100 % dodgy /faulty hardware.
