Hi all,
I often (particularly when compiling something in the background) have a situation that my KDE4 almost doesn't respond. With atop I can see that the disk is busy in 100%. Can this be a reason of this behaviour? Can I change some setting/priorities in a way that KDE4 will not have this hanging behaviour? Thanks! Last edited by DutchDaemon; April 15th, 2012 at 02:22. |

Swapping a lot causes that effect. Try using x11-wm/fvwm2 as WM while heavy compiling, it is very responsive.

If you can get a command line running, try swapinfo(8) to see if effectively the swapping is preventing your machine to working. The second step is to understand why the machine is swapping, and this is probably due to not enough RAM to run such a desktop (or you have a program that is killing your machine).
