I think I may have discovered why my system was freezing in the GUI. My video card began displaying artifacts all over my screen even during BIOS POST just after rebooting on the last lockup. The monitor is fine as I am able to connect it to my laptop.
A new video card is on the way, hopefully that fixes this issue at least on my part. Perhaps whoever is also having issues might benefit from trying out another video card? Mine was 3 years old.
