    ASUS Laptop Compatibility

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220605 Will FreeBSD run on this laptop? I haven't found any information about FreeBSD on this particular laptop.

    Menu Icons in FreeBSD

Is the port for Xfce 4.6 missing dependencies on FreeBSD? Apparently, the default icon theme inherits from other such themes, but they're not installed. So, you have some missing icons.

    OpenSolaris and Flash

I've never had problems with Flash on OpenSolaris. OpenSolaris may run slow in comparison to other distributions because it may still have a lot of the server/workstation services and features enabled whereas MilaX may not.

    Chromium

OSS was encumbered software, but now it isn't. Yet, it's easier now to keep putting more band-aids on the mess that Linux sound is than to just switch to OSS4.

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

Sigh, seems as though I'm completely Linux-ed out. I'm happier with running Matlab on FreeBSD than I am natively on Linux. Just so many things about Linux that turn me off. Oh well, it'll get there some day.

There is a howto floating around on the net. You may want to look it up.

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

I don't know, I haven't touched Linux in ages. These days, my proven combo is FreeBSD and Mac OS X. Total Unix and total productivity!

    HOWTO: QEMU on FreeBSD

Thank you so much for this. I really hope that VirtualBox gets ported though.

    *BSD and linux distro wars

Linux is not Unix. That's the best way to explain it. The GNU-influenced Linux development model does not follow the Unix model. The Unix model ensures quality software. Part of that quality comes with the consistency that an operating system offers as opposed to a distribution. Therefore...

    *BSD and linux distro wars

I actually think OpenSolaris has decent potential to make it in the desktop world. Hardware support and usability are improving with each release. Plus, Sun has more capacity to get ports of proprietary software than Linux does. It would make a far better desktop Unix.

    Installing FreeBSD on old server

I don't think later releases break compatibility with older hardware, but you should try an older release just in case.

    Slow disk throughput

I second that. If both are SATA, then shouldn't they at least be 150 MB/s.

    FreeBSD book

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Absolute-FreeBSD/Michael-W-Lucas/e/9781593271510/?itm=1 This is another great resource for FreeBSD. You should read the FreeBSD Handbook first and then this resource.

    Which shell do you use?

I generally use ZSH for everything. No, I have not changed the root shell. I just use sudo, which preserves env vars.

    Dynamic WM

I used to use dwm, but just got tired of it and all tiling window managers. Now, I just use Xfce and Gnome.

    Firefox 3 and Plugins

I was happily using Firefox 3.0.1. Then, I decided to update to 3.0.4, and now Firefox won't detect any of my plugins, which include swfdec, java, and mplayer-plugin. I had this issue with 3.0.2 and 3.0.3, which is why I keep rolling back to 3.0.1 from my Portmaster backups. Versions 3.0.1...

    OpenSolaris: Your Opinions

I haven't really tested it much on real hardware. It works well on my Dell Optiplex GX620, but that's a relatively old machine. It works on Parallels, VirtualBox, and VMWare Fusion, if that counts for anything. According to other people's experiences, OpenSolaris has expanded hardware...

    OpenSolaris: Your Opinions

What's everyone's opinion on OpenSolaris? I never really liked OpenSolaris 2008.05, but today I tested 2008.11-RC2, and it's very polished. It reminds me very much of Mac OS X in terms of usability and features (particularly the frontend for ZFS backups akin to Time Machine). I think it...
