usually to start openoffice you need one of those: soffice for openoffice start menu swriter for word procesor etc OT: why on earth do you use ports and not packages (if you don't even use ports features)?

+1 - if you really need gui for this task or use pkgsrc with pkgin (should work with FreeBSD, works for sure with NetBSD and DragonFlyBSD and also on mac os x).

Deinstall it, remove (or copy to other location) config file, install fluxbox from ports (if you must) or pkg and try again.

Is it only with gnome (have you tried other window managers -> openbox/fluxbox/dwm etc) ?

OK, I've changed my previous post. I have a netbook with ssd - swap is also not recommended on ssd, so I don't use it since I don't have an option (hd drive just for swap) :D

Also your xorg.conf may not be correct. + if you want other window manager then twm (3 xterm windows&clock), you should install one with pkg_add -r xyz where xyz is gnome2-lite, kde3 or kde4 (kdebase), xfce4, e17... what ever you like. Have a look at freshports.org for available FBSD...

You may not use swap at all, if you have a lot (1GB or more) of RAM, but it is not recommended. All my BSD setups (FreeBSD & now DragonFlyBSD have no swap, and only while cleaning up HAMMER system uses all of its RAM but still fells very responsive). I had Freebsd even on 4 GB SD card (slow)...

I have DragonFlyBSD on my netbook (eeepc/HAMMER fs) with ssd (4+16GB) - earlier I had FreeBSD (with UFS). Speed&performance is OK. No problem while compiling apps from pkgsrc or ports Since ssdrives are cheap then no need to worry about its usage (remember to backup your data!).

Isn't mac os x "a perfect OS for macbook"? ;)
