    error when running 'pkg update'

You can find some info in the handbook Chapter 26. It is where it mentions upgrading packages with pkg-static, and there is also a note in that chapter stating that kernel modules that work for 13.1 doesn't mean they work for 13.2 (as an example, by coincidentally too). If you have a lot of...

    error when running 'pkg update'

if you did a pkg upgrade after upgrading to 13.2, try pkg-static upgrade -finstead.

    Is vscode broken ?

Is anyone using Lapce instead? It's still in infancy, but maybe the more people start using it, the more chance people contribute and move development along, maybe we could have a solid replacement for the long run. I use helix as a safe bet, but lapce got more stable these past 3-4 releases...

jails How-to install Debian Bookworm as Userland in Freebsd to support running Linux applications

I am a total noob on the subject, but needed to do the same as you and tried a few things, mainly using this thread for guidance ubuntu linuxinator . First thing I tried was using debootstrap with bookworm as per that guide, but it didn't install properly and had some failed shtuffs. The best I...

Plasma wayland fails with "kwin_wayland_drm: No suitable DRM devices have been found"

Well I've uninstalled kde5 (so haven't checked), but maybe just give it a try on a new user account, just to eliminate anything affecting it in your home folder. Probably nothing, but it is something I tend to try, and easy to do.

Plasma wayland fails with "kwin_wayland_drm: No suitable DRM devices have been found"

Out of curiosity, are you using linprocfs instead of procfs for /proc. as shown in that link? Does everybody, and it's just me that's late to the party? It's just a 'duh' moment for me because I've always used freebsd procfs for that, which doesn't have the full features (or whatever they're...

Plasma wayland fails with "kwin_wayland_drm: No suitable DRM devices have been found"

I don't use kde, but installed and tried, and got similar error. From sddm, plasma(wayland) hangs. I stopped sddm and ran the command from terminal and got the 'No suitable DRM' error, I even tried with seatd service running. I'm also on 14-current with a 6700Xt navy-flounder. Someone else might...

Plasma wayland fails with "kwin_wayland_drm: No suitable DRM devices have been found"

afaik, kde (and gnome) only work on Xorg. Unless something changed recently.

Help with VPN SurfShark install and config on server

This is a little late, but if you still want to try surfshark with wg, it was pretty easy on 13 because you can get the config file from their site, rename it to wg0.conf and it would work. I have since moved to 14 due to hardware change and it doesn't work atm, (I don't have time to fiddle) and...

Linux Compatibility Mode, Linux Jails, or How to Make FreeBSD my daily driver :)

There is also bhyve you can look into, but depends on what you need to run. I usually use linux compat (ubuntu) for browsers with widevine for drm -netflix/spotify, but I don't know much more than following guides and copy pasting commands. If it's something that requires fixing or tinkering...

    Solved RX 6400 Not Supported

I have a Rx 6700XT and it works fine on 14-current, with drm-515-kmod. So you may just be missing something else. First of all, did you install xf86-video-amdgpu and remember to add user to video group etc? Gnome with amd has a DRI3 bug and doesn't work for me unless I set it to DRI2 in xorg...

    Wayland instructions confusion

I think Hyprland ran if you saw that, that is the default wallpaper, however these WM's usually have a terminal and app launcher they use by default (set in the default config, along with the key bindings). You usually have to look in the default config file to figure what they are/which they...

    Wayland instructions confusion

Always run wayland WM from tty as user, especially at first, to check if everything is running fine/set up properly on the OS side, before the wayland WM itself. Sometimes those WM can be a bit flakey and you want to ensure everything is fine on FreeBSD's side, before running into issues with...

    ZIG programming language.

I am not an expert and have only been learning rust for a few weeks, so I just wanted to chime in with a few things beside what people mentioned here already on the two, because this argument seems to come up a bit in the unix world. I think at this point I've read more articles than I read...

Complete desktop system backup - how and what?

Interesting. I have a couple of questions if anyone can answer. 1. Does Bectl work the same as beadm in this regard (i.e is that what import/export commands are for)? Any limitations compared? 2. Bhyve zvol VMs. Is there a best practice? If they are on a separate dataset, they won't be...

Solved SDDM --> "WindowMaker" not listed as available session

The package probably doesn't include the .desktop file (fvwm2&3 don't either), if you check under /usr/local/share/xsessions and it's not there, you can create one or copy one of the others you have and edit it. Or you can have a .xinitrc in your home and use User Session in SDDM.

What happened to desktop environment on FreeBSD right now?

The Gnome thing is a bug with DRI3, (I was told), and you have to add an entry to xorg to use DRI2 instead. I think it effects AMD cards. ❯ cat /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-driver-amdgpu.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "amdgpu" BusID...
