Ah, I see. Great, thanks for the help. Have a good weekend.

    [PC-BSD] Second Life

Isn't PC-BSD just a pretty face for FreeBSD? I thought the code beneath was the same. I will cruise over there just for the heck of it, though.

    FreeBSD as Desktop

Sorry, don't mean to gush, but I just can't believe the difference in performance. No matter what Linux distro I tried; dragging the corner of a window in KDE was always slow and choppy. In PC-BSD it's really quick and smooth. Applications snap open almost instantly. Transferring files is...

    [PC-BSD] Second Life

Ah, well, just thought I'd give it shot. I have a Windows partition for games, so no biggie. Thanks, and have a good day.

    [PC-BSD] Second Life

Ok, I can't seem to find this anywhere. When I try to run Second Life on PC-BSD 9.0, I get the following errors: Warning: Did not register secondlife:// handler with KDE: Directory /home/mooreted/.kde/share/services does not exist. bin/do-not-directly-run-imprudence-bin: error while loading...

And, I just tested flash in Chromium and it works great. No problems so far. :D

    FreeBSD as Desktop

OMG! Just installed PC-BSD 9; I'm really impressed. This is really nice. The devs have come a long way in the last couple of years. This thing is really sweet. I think I found my new OS.

    FreeBSD as Desktop

I created a nice thread last night, but being late, I must have forgotten to submit it. I have the following system: AMD 9500 CPU Nvidia 460GTX Graphics Adapter 6GB DDR2 RAM I dual boot OpenSuse and Windows 7. I tried FreeBSD a couple of years ago, and something wasn't working right and I had...

    Linux to BSD

Every distro and OS have their particular strengths and weaknesses. These kinds of discussions are like Ford vs Chevy. Personally; I work 6 days a week so I like an OS that does a lot of the work for me. I don't have time to mess with it.

Exactly. Too much unnecessary cruft out there.

No problem; I probably should have been more clear. Thanks for all your help.

    Updating applications

No, that's what I did before I read your post. I'm glad I stopped and asked. As I said, your help is very appreciated. You all have cleared it up quite nicely. Thank you.

    Linux to BSD

Yeah, the web has gone to hell. When I need information I don't need flash and cool javascript popups and animated talking heads. I wish web designers would mellow out.

What's wrong with aliases? I use them all the time. Makes life easier.

    Updating applications

Thanks everyone. Guess I've been using Linux too long. Following the handbook I did: freebsd-update fetch freebsd-update install portupgrade -af After about 12 hours I got tired of watching the compiler run. Then I tried portsnap, but it didn't update applications. Then I read about...

    Updating applications

I am a bit confused about updating FreeBSD. In Windows and Linux you update a lot to get the latest releases and bug fixes. I am getting the impression that in FreeBSD, you install RELEASE and just use "freebsd-update fetch update" to get patches. One thing I notice is that Firefox is...

    Linux to BSD

That depends on the distro. Slackware and Archlinux, for instance, do not install anything you don't want. The bigger distros are trying to cater to "Joe Sixpack" for some strange reason. Anyway, I have run into one problem: no guest additions for FreeBSD as a guest in Virtualbox. It makes me...
