    Other Awesome Installation Instructions

You can literally do the same steps mentioned in the handbook for XFCE but replace all instances of "xfce4" with "awesome". You may enjoy PC-BSD (http://www.pcbsd.org/) if you are wanting to get to know FreeBSD's Desktop capabilities. You can simply install whatever WMs you like and they'll...

Not sure if this is helpful but I successfully upgraded from stock 10.0-RELEASE (no added patches) to 10.1-RELEASE just this past Monday without problem. FreeBSD mybox 10.1-RELEASE-p5 FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p5 #0: Tue Jan 27 08:55:07 UTC 2015...

Shell sed to replace many words in many files

Haha thanks Clementbsd, my wife and I actually hope to visit France for our next trip, but neither of us drink. But perhaps you could give me the name of your favourite resturant so we could treat our Canadian taste buds with some french cuisine! ;)

Shell sed to replace many words in many files

Sorry, I don't have time to fully answer this but this will get you started: You could run a command like this for each of the substitutions (32 of them): find <FOLDER_NAME_HERE> -name "*.ip4" | xargs sed -i -r 's/.*.255$/32/g' find <FOLDER_NAME_HERE> -name "*.ip4" | xargs sed -i -r...

    Solved FreeBSD on a Dell PowerEdge R730xd - 13G

I just recently successuly installed to a Dell PowerEdge using the memstick image method. So maybe try that: Download the memory stick image, use the /bin/dd command to write the image to the USB stick, and then boot (making sure you enter the boot prompt selector and selecting USB).

    Slow Internet on New Install

I have been having troubles getting my Asus UX32 laptop to connect via wireless as well. It has an Intel 6235 wireless chip which turns out was not supported in FreeBSD 10 RELEASE. It does however appear to work out of the box with FreeBSD 11-CURRENT. I am puzzled as to why your connection works...

    Why do people use FreeBSD?

I use FreeBSD because it just works. It does what I want and stays out of my way, without nagging me about minor package updates etc. I have also become very annoyed lately by Linux (Fedora specifically) making me jump through extra hoops in order to listen to my digital music. When I install...

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 WiFi Driver

Just tried installing using the snapshot named FreeBSD-11.0-CURRENT-amd64-20140918-r271779 on my zenbook UX31A and the wireless (Centrino 6235) is never detected, nor is it UEFI bootable out of the box. Is anyone else experiencing this?

moc fails to build with ffmpeg enabled

Interesting. I have the same version and still get build errors when making audio/moc from ports. Not sure what manner of magic you've used to make that work but I can't seem to get it.

moc fails to build with ffmpeg enabled

Looking up the website for moc does show that it was indeed updated to include the plugin changes in moc-2.5.0-alph0. However the newest in ports is moc-2.4.4(stable). Is streaming working for you now? What version of audio/moc and audio/ffmpeg are you using?

moc fails to build with ffmpeg enabled

Having similar issues on FreeBSD 10-RELEASE. Looks like audio/moc's ffmpeg plugin is using stuff that has been deprecated by the multimedia/ffmpeg project. Attempting to patch and/or notify creator of moc.

    no sound on thinkpad x201

Check out the handbook in section 8.2.3 here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html. This worked for me.

    Recording SSH session

Not sure if you are saying you want a user's actions recorded once they ssh IN to your machane, or you want to record them when they ssh OUT. If it's the first, then couldn't you just run any commands/scripts from the /etc/profile file? It is read when a user's shell is started up I believe...

    Why FreeBSD?

I prefer those 2 distros as well and understand why you like them. In Gentoo it is nice to be able to build software from source as you need. This has come particularly useful for my job being able to use portage system to pull in all dependancies and then cross-compile it all into a nice little...

Can someone help with a USB gamepad/joystick issue?

Welcome to FreeBSD! I too came from Slackware a few years ago. And like you, have also had some issues with USB gamepads. The NES emulator seemed to work okay for me as well, though the second joystick won't allow itself to be mapped in Xonotic so I am still looking for advice on this topic myself.
