    OpenBSD CWM

I'm surprised that OpenBSD CWM is not in the ports tree. Has anyone recently had a go at porting it? I can only find old discussions about this.

[PHORONIX] Sony's PlayStation 4 Is Running Modified FreeBSD 9

I knew it was not the real Dutch when he used two consecutive exclamation marks. That is not grammatically correct!

FreeBSD ZFS NAS with XBMC. Possible?

Hi, my home server/HTPC is very similar to what your require and I've been running this setup for three years with no issues. Just recently I updated my documentation with improvements, perhaps it can be useful to you. http://www.overclock.net/a/freebsd-htpc-and-home-server Like @phoenix I run...

ezjail-admin create .. error while creating a jail

That's just the default directory you can put packages in to auto install when you create a new jail. Check the flavour example script /usr/jails/flavours/example/etc/rc.d/ezjail.flavour.example, it has references that directory in there. If you just want to get rid of that error message, try...

Your worst day as a FreeBSD user/administrator

After 10 years of working with UNIX I actually have never done this, so maybe I'm not trying hard enough :e However I indirectly did, so I guess it counts. I was teaching AIX to one of the uni grads at work and I told him to remove a user simply by. rm -r ~user rmuser -p user Except one day...

Flame bait: Why BSD is dying, or How I learned to stop worrying and love Linux

With modern CPUs getting faster and faster, and the upcoming switch to LLVM. I would have thought ports compilation times would become less of an issue?

Choosing FreeBSD Over CentOS Linux 64-bit

On a side note many Linux users are leaving CentOS for Scientific Linux due to the delays in patches with CentOS. So CentOS is a bad choice regardless.

AIX: Which Application is Using a Specific Port

You can also use lsof if it's installed. Most AIX admins install it. # lsof -i:5524 # lslpp -w /usr/sbin/lsof File Fileset Type ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- /usr/sbin/lsof...

    Seriously

Once you look past all its borrowed mainframe technology, it's pretty unix-y to me. As someone that makes a living maintaining AIX servers I certainly don't feel lost using FreeBSD in my spare time.

    New to BSD

If you mix ports and packages and later do a portmaster -a will it attempt to compile later versions of the packages that is installed?

    9000 patches in 3 days

I just ran a portsnap fetch update and I'm downloading a ton of patches. It seems unusually high, have I done something wrong? Updating from Fri Mar 18 15:22:03 EST 2011 to Mon Mar 21 13:06:53 EST 2011. Fetching 3 metadata patches.. done. Applying metadata patches... done. Fetching 0 metadata...

    Which shell do you use?

Well for me it makes sense to keep my life simple by using a shell that is available on all systems I may need to use in the future. Ksh93 is available on all the propriety unix systems, linux distros and FreeBSD.

    Which shell do you use?

Sorry I probably should have asked if it's "still for licensing reasons?". I am aware of the history, and the reasons we have bash, zsh and pdksh. But since ksh93 has been opensource for a while and since mksh is a relatively new offering. Are people in this thread making the switch to mksh for...

    Which shell do you use?

I use ksh93 (interactive + scripting) because I use AIX at work and it is included in the base install. However ksh88 is the default root shell. :( I haven't heard of mksh either until I saw killersmurfs post but I was hoping he would have included ksh93 in his tests. From what I read ksh93 is...
