    2014 Forums Migration To Xenforo

The new configuration is engaging. I like the look of threads for reading.

    Name that movie quote

The following seems to me a fitting addition to this film's presence here:

usr/src/crypto/openssl/ssl/s3_cbc.c: No such file or directory

Alas, I do not know. I will add, however, that my i386 install is relatively recent and derived from FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-memstick.img, which I used freebsd-update to upgrade to the current: 9.1-RELEASE-p1

usr/src/crypto/openssl/ssl/s3_cbc.c: No such file or directory

I encountered the same thing, BUT only with i386 system: 9.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE #0 r243826 My AMD64 hosts, [now] running the following, were fine: 8.3-RELEASE-p7 and 9.1-RELEASE-p2 One bit of trouble is that freebsd-update doesn't register a move from 9.1-RELEASE-p1 to 9.1-RELEASE-p2.

High load average with idle state

I suspect you've encountered an issue that is reported as: 173541. [See the 'Problem Reports' database for full details.] Skipping to the useful stuff: Like Johan Broman, I was able to work around the problem using the following sysctl -w kern.eventtimer.timer=LAPIC He also points out...

    Failed pool hangs system

Of course. This should have been obvious to me. Alas, my pools are solitary and I spoke from that perspective. It seems you are getting some feedback via Questions@ and File-Systems... Please consider posting here regarding diagnostic progress or any resolution. This issue is curious and...

    Favorite movies?

There are some great films on this list, but it is incomplete without Equilibrium. There. That's better. ;)

Old servers as desktops (or other creations)

Here I was thinking I am lucky to get old desktops to turn into servers... FWIW: Old, preferably business grade, laptops make good test servers here; even with degraded batteries they've got 'UPS' on board. My latest creation has a non-working LCD and the keyboard unmounted to vent heat...

Linux vs. BSD = No real difference?

There are many differences between Linux distributions and FreeBSD, but it makes me saddest to think that a Linux world does not know how to make love. A real loss. There's so much bashing and gnu implementations of *everything* in purge like fashion, I can't help but see a causal correlation.

    Which GNU/Linux distro to try?

I do not see it in the responses thus far and I've had a few decent experiences with it, so consider OpenSUSE. The following piqued my interest in revisiting a workstation installation of the same: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/03/15/suse_linux_12_3_review/ Cheers!

    Failed pool hangs system

What is acceptable? This may well be an interesting test case and I am curious... Given your scenario: the ZFS dataset is toast because a critical chunk is missing following the third failure. You are not able to recover all of the data even if you were able to start a resilver with a new...

Possible convert. Please help me justify this madness.

FreeBSD is wonderful With respect to your questions: FreeBSD is actively maintained and well ahead of Linux distributions in many areas. You'll find ZFS and jails here and see them actively developed as state-of-the-art tools. Ports of recent software are regularly updated and easily...

"freebsd-update cron" returns "no mirrors found"

update and update2 servers down (?) Same issue here, but I've been at it a while and note the following: Manual runs of freebsd-update on my systems return the same "no mirrors found" message. I've tried from three different hosts using two ISPs. The site http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com...

    which architecture should I use?

I'd like to have Vesa back. My laptop went from i386 to AMD64 this year. I liked the ability to expand my screen's display capacity. Alas, I haven't otherwise bothered as my i386 machines are all accessed over SSH and KDE 4.5's Konsole provides for sizing and screen slicing, no prob. My T61p...

    Can't ping

Whoa, truss. Big hammer. Please post what you are actually entering to the console. your error is defined, but the x factor in ping(x) = error is not stated. ping has always seemed so reliable to me--and forthright. It is telling you something. So, what did you ask it ? once we know...
