While not an optimal solution, I'd like to leave a note here about YouTube Music Key, which is a music streaming service now being rolled out by YouTube with some extra features on top of the selection of music videos already on YouTube. The only reason this is worth mentioning is that as far as...
I personally would like to see an iNotify API. I know its a Linux thing but it is very convenient.
In many cases I just use Go for these types of problems, it provides an fsnotify interface across platforms that is "good enough".
I've never touched this package before, and last night after upgrading pkg, I had it installed as part of the upgrade process. Any idea why? It happened on two different hosts I have FreeBSD10 installed on.
Most of these threads contain references to installing FreeBSD on ancient hardware, a lot of which isn't even available anymore. Its very frustrating!
I have a relatively recent suggestion: a System76 Gazelle (Ivy Bridge) which is about a year old (i7,16gb ram, 1080p screen, big ssd etc)
I...
After a short hiatus with debian-unstable, I tried a fresh install of FreeBSD 10 tonight and it is very impressive. Some pain points for me in earlier versions were rebuilding of huge ports and kernel rebuilds. pkg and freebsd-update are major improvements and have already saved me a bunch of...
System76 Gazelle:
https://www.system76.com/laptops/model/gazp8
my specs: i7, 16GB RAM, 180GB SSD. 1080p matte display.
works without any tweaking:
No-pain install
Intel wireless
X at 1080p
Intel audio driver
I haven't tested suspend/resume etc but I can confirm this as a modern laptop for...
I know this thread has long since died, but I was burned by this exact problem. I also spent an hour trying to figure out why overnight, an external mouse was not functioning
Turns out at work I was given a "gaming" mouse that actually had batteries in it, and these batteries had died. Just...
For the time being its probably just safe to avoid buying hardware that uses Broadcom NICs unless you have specific and clear reports of a specific chipset working, and I mean without NDIS.
Intel and Atheros NICs *tend* to have better support, but with regards to Intel specifically, you also...
Yes, I am assuming you are using a FreeBSD-9 install disk. 8.x cannot deal with the GPT
The tool I am referring to is gparted. I think the command I used was "destroy ada0", which as you can imagine is dangerous. The "show" command should show your GPT prior to running this.
I have had this issue with Apple laptops.
Try a 9.x install disc. Before the installer starts, you will have the opportunity to start a shell. In that shell, start gpart. Use gpart to remove the GPT using the destroy command. Then return to the installer and proceed.
Note the instructions I...
I'm currently playing around with the haskell yesod web framework. It uses a webserver which by default only utilizes IPV6. While I understand the problems with deploying this on the WAN presently, localhost debugging connections should not be an issue. Chrome is able to connect to this server...
I've been glancing over the press for the new "ultrabook" systems touted by Intel and its partners...particularly the Lenovo U300 and the Acer A3. These systems look very nice and really address some of my gripes with existing laptops - boot times and battery life, both thanks to the SSD. I use...
although i use arch where i have to use linux, it isn't a good choice for environments that demand stability. its the only linux i have used in the last few years that will periodically explode after a package update...although its getting better.
i doubt many freebsd users would recommend...
I ended up just using en external usb wifi g wireless adapter that is stated explicitly as supported in the man page for urtw.
Yes the situation is that bad...you can't even use a new compact wifi n adapter
If I recall, I obtained the CURRENT (9) .iso from here:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/snapshots/201105/
I think the "cautionary note" regarding the use of snapshots is already understood ;)
And also, note that the following procedure is to make FreeBSD the *only* OS on the computer.
I...
I was very frustrated with dealing with the GPT on the macbook so I used the install disk for FreeBSD9 (not 8.x) and used the fixit shell to get gpart to just blow it away.
