    Why did you start smoking?

I was a light to moderate smoker in my late teen years up until I was 25 years old. I'm glad I quit that habit(40+ years ago). I quit drinking May 23, 2015. I do eat too much though. Heh. You can get addicted to anything.

    Stopping with smoking.

I quit smoking 41 years ago. My wife bet me that I couldn't quit. I think I quit to spite her. She knows me very well. I quit cold turkey. If you're really struggling maybe the patch? I quit all drugs May 23, 2015.

Share your OpenBSD or OpenBSD derivative experience (for FreeBSD users)

Nice! I installed Fluxbox this AM and switched from using XFCE to Fluxbox on OpenBSD 7.4. Blazing fast! I've had a similar experience with OpenBSD, that is, sound and video just works using OpenBSD 7.4. My OpenBSD box is a Dell Optiplex 9020, i7 CPU @3.20 GHz, 32 GB RAM, and a one TB SSD.

Perhaps I was not clear. I mean that the OpenBSD community is generally very supportive *if* you do some of your own trouble shooting and follow suggestions. I find that to be also true of the FreeBSD community.

Dell USB mouse not working on FreeBSD 14.0

Good morning! Is there something I need to add to /etc/rc.conf for my Dell USB mouse to work on FreeBSD 14.0? Any other setting? I have moused enabled. My mouse previously worked on 13.2. Thanks for any and all replies.

is "vi" worth learning in 2022?

I think Vi is a good thing to learn as most Unix-type operating systems ship with it pre-installed or you can easily get it. A nice utility if things are broken.

    Back to debian

Best wishes with Debian. If you haven't nuked your system yet you could post a question here in the forums. As previously mentioned OpenBSD is a good option for sound card support.

I like that OpenBSD is provided as is. This is what we've created, so use it or not. I've found that the OpenBSD developers and community members are very helpful *if* you're willing to dig through the ample documentation and do some of your own trouble shooting. They don't suffer fools.

I have happily used OpenBSD since 5.0 (2011) and I have used FreeBSD off and on since 5.x. I'm currently dual booting OpenBSD 7.4 on a Slackware machine. For XFCE sound and video just works on OpenBSD. I like that OpenBSD is stable and secure (paranoid by default-haha). There's a tonne of...

    Society and Addiction

Several days ago I received a global e-mail from a highly regarded software engineer who was in distress. I'm an addict in recovery, I stopped using May 23, 2015. My life today is a blessing compared to my active addiction days. I truly hope that the engineer gets the support he needs to...

    Solved NTPDATE settings in 14.0

I modified /etc/rc.conf by adding ntpdate_enable="YES". All is well now. FreeBSD 14.0 now correctly sets time via NTP on boot-up. Many thanks to all of you for your kind help. I am grateful. :)

    Solved NTPDATE settings in 14.0

Greetings. For FreeBSD 13.2 during the installation I set the date and enabled NTPDATE to start. The date and time was successfully set on boot up. Something has changed in 14.0 and this no longer works. Are there new settings I'm missing?

What do you think about the move of RHEL ?

Exactly. Development works best in BSD and Linux when code is freely shared. It's sad that Red Hat has chosen profit over open source ideology(I get it though). This form of thinking will spread (Suse is going to have their own enterprise version of Linux).

What do you think about the move of RHEL ?

Indeed! I remember when Ballmer characterized Linux as a cancer. IBM bought their operating system(DOS) from Bill Gates back in the day, they needed something to run their PCs. And they've purchased RH. They're a successful business aimed at being profitable.

What do you think about the move of RHEL ?

Alma and Rocky are impacted. Fedora is the development branch of RH, it's not impacted. This move by the parent company(IBM) makes complete sense. IBM bought RH to make money, they have no incentive to give away their source code for free. It's ironic and sad that IBM was the champion of...
