Just a side note most probably already know. You could also use drill that is part of base system. drill freebsd.pool.ntp.org will use nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf

Maybe stupid question, but have you configured wireless interface in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and /etc/rc.conf like advised in Handbook ? Buy the way, you should not need to compile that module yourself, as it is included in base system (in stable branch).

Sometime ago in similar situation I used exmples from snd_hda to get correct configuration. If you have not yet looked at those, they might give some help.
