    OpenOffice

When I was in a bind I used the Microsoft Word Viewer over Wine. Worked fine without issue for me.

    Favorite FreeBSD Feature?

My favorite feature is the base system. I found on my original install that having mount_smbfs as part of the base system really nice to have as well as having both ee and clang. The base system is just so rock solid it makes me feel better about building ports on it. The base system really is a...

libreoffice dumps core after upgrade to 4.0.1

Mine has been broken for a while too. Today I ran an update and a new version of LibreOffice appears, but it is marked broken when I try to build it. So it appears it is being addressed and with any luck will be fixed soon.

Ports/Package Options in new 9.1 install

Honestly, I do like ports too. And on an old machine running portsnap fetch update doesn't take too long, but when followed by portmaster -a it can easily take 2+ days to complete an update on my old laptop and I think binary's might be better suited for the old machine.

Please pay more attention to desktop development

As a new FreeBSD user, I have to say FreeBSD is great the way it is. It's not what an average user thinks of an OS, but as is it is totally customized by the user. PC-BSD really does fill the void I believe you are looking for. All the major desktop environments (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXDE) are...

    lang/tcl-modules port

The real question is what to do. As he stated, one does a portmaster -a, it reaches the lang/tcl-modules and just terminates. The remaining ports that need to be updated don't update. So if we uninstall this and other ports are dependent on tcl, where do we find the base Tcl distributions to...

    Why do you use FreeBSD?

I'm a newcomer to FreeBSD. I've always been intrigued by it and have tried many OS's. Now that I have it installed, I love it. I enjoy it's stability and simplicity. There is a learning curve and the documentation is a great aid. I also really like the fact that the developers take the time to...

Trying PC BSD instead of Debian Squeeze

I wont defend Debian, but from my experience if you need to remove a battery to reboot then likely the battery itself needs to be replaced. I've come across even windows machines that have had that happen and it is usually the battery that is at fault. I had Debian and prefer FreeBSD myself, I...

What Window Manager do you use on FreeBSD?

I'm running FreeBSD 9.1 on an old laptop, about 11 yr old with a p4-m processor so performance is limited. Currently I'm running x11/lxde-meta. In the past, I used to run linux on it and have tried many other window managers and desktop environments. I really like x11-wm/openbox for a window...

How Did PC-BSD 9.1 Get Released Before FreeBSD 9.1?

Mine reads: LATEST NEWS 2012-12-18 New committer: Mark Johnston (src) 2012-12-18 PC-BSD 9.1 is Released 2012-12-18 New committer: Mark Johnston (src) 2012-12-18 PC-BSD 9.1 is Released I only read PC-BSD Released, unless one is a typo. But found it no different anywhere...

    FreeBSD 9.1 what's new ?

I think asking "What's New?" of an OS that is still in it's beta stage (ie development) is a bit premature.

If you could change one thing in FreeBSD...

Netflix. I understand they use FreeBSD servers and contribute back to the community. They already have an android app. An andoid emulator that would run the netflix app would be sufficient or perhaps they could let us know what is needed to make their app work. I doubt they'd release the code so...

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

I've been drueling over BSD for years and am excited to be joining the community. As for linux, I've tried many distro's over the years and I'd have to say my favorite has been Debian. I haven't tried #! but I would give it consideration if I hadn't stopped with Debian.

    new to FreeBSD, swap/filesystem

Ok, I've been doing lots of reading. I found the article @ http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/solid-state/ and am wondering if it or how much of it applies to my situation. It does talk of using no swap space, much smaller drive space than I am using and embedded systems, so I'm...

    new to FreeBSD, swap/filesystem

The tunefs man page was very helpful. I'm not involved in any large ports at the moment, but if/when I do I've got other pc's that I'd use. It looks like a 2gb swap should fit my needs about right. Again, thanks for all the help. Perhaps after I get some time under my belt I'll be able to...

    new to FreeBSD, swap/filesystem

Thanks. I kind of figured UFS was the way to go, a few threads I've read had me thinking maybe ZFS was better for SSD's so I needed to ask. With linux, 1gb swap has been more than adequate. But if FreeBSD is likely to perform better and be more stable with 2-4gb then that's what I'll do. I...

    new to FreeBSD, swap/filesystem

Hi, I'm new to FreeBSD, but plan to make it the last OS my current laptop will ever see. It has an Intel 1.6ghz P4-M, 1gb DDR ram & a 32gb PATA SSD. It is a personal use machine. Which means I will be developing C programs with it and doing basic internet use, perhaps a little leisurely...
