Learning C programming, C99 or not

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm still not sure which book to go for, but I'm checking out every book mentioned here. Doesn't it matter if I choose a book that uses K&R C, ANSI/ISO C (or C99) when it comes to portability?

Learning C programming, C99 or not

OK, so it seems like it's time to really learn some C considering how much used the language is in the open source world. When first learning C I want to do it "the right way", if it's possible to say such a thing. ANSI this, and ANSI that... should it be C89, or would it be OK to go for C99...

How do I get to my thumb drive?

On a default system you need to be root to mount an USB device, so use su or sudo to become root. Plug in the USB-stick, and let's see where we can find it. ls /dev | grep da You will then see something like da0, da0s1, but the numbers may vary. Now Let's try mounting da0s1. (replace...

Help contribute and make FreeBSD even better!

Thanks! Great to see that someone agree with me. Walking around with that FreeBSD shirt is a great way to advertise. I'm on my way to order one as well, and that should have been done long time ago. I'm not running CURRENT but I believe those who are, are really doing an important job...

Help contribute and make FreeBSD even better!

I'm a bit surprised to see that you are absolutely right :) I thought DesktopBSD had plans to switch over to GNOME, but instead they both use KDE, how useful... That is understandable. Some people are more busy than others, and some are only interested in certain sections of the forum. We are...

update system with CVSUP and compile kernel

Portupgrade, Portmaster and Portmanager helps you install and update ports. freebsd-updated help you update the rest of the system, like ls, ps, rm and such things, and the kernel. freebsd-update can be used to get security fixes, or to upgrade from one version of FreBSD to another. Keep in mind...

Help contribute and make FreeBSD even better!

I haven't actually tried PC-BSD since I have little interest in running anything else than pure FreeBSD. But it seems to me that PC-BSD can be an important catalyst for FreeBSD, and a great entrypoint for new users that aren't ready for FreeBSD. PC-BSD for KDE users, and DesktopBSD for GNOME...

Help contribute and make FreeBSD even better!

There are almost 4300 members on this forum... 100 of them bothered to read what I mean can be a very important post. All I see is silence - does that mean that people agree, don't agree, or don't care?... or can't read? :p I have shared my thoughts about what I think will be important for...

Help contribute and make FreeBSD even better! First of all I would like to open this post by making it clear that I have no connection with the FreeBSD team nor any other FreeBSD related group or foundation. I'm just an ordinary FreeBSD user like anyone else in here, running FreeBSD on my...

Did you guys sign this petition for native flash for FreeBSD?

lme@: Thanks for sharing the information. I already knew this, but thought it was confidential. Even though they have signed an NDA, I can't just sit here and hope it goes our way. We should keep showing Adobe that they have made the right choice. http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1060...

    Select sources for FreeBSD

You don't need to select any sources as far as I know. The driver should be located under /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver. There is an article located here that could be useful.

Did you guys sign this petition for native flash for FreeBSD?

I have, but I still can't see any flash player 6 months later, nor any updated information regarding it. In other words, I see no reason to sit here and wait. It's nice to see that people have started using http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-1060

Did you guys sign this petition for native flash for FreeBSD?

Thanks for that one danger@! The sad part is that users will have to register to be able to vote, and that this will most likely scare away many users and important votes. My vote is there, so I have at least done my part of the job so far :)

    Security Question Regarding OpenSSL

A nice alternative to applying patches manually is the freebsd-update utility that is already installed on your system. This will do all the work for you - downloading and applying patches, and you don't even have to recompile anything. It's as easy to use as this: freebsd-update fetch...
