switching to slim, .profile not read

I found this thread in a google search because I am still having the same problem. Using slim in virtualbox, .profile isn't being read. I'm using MATE and I was able to fix this by checking "Run command as login shell" in mate terminal's profile preferences ("Title and command" tab). I'm...

PKG Repository Changed to Quarterly in 10.2?

kpa -My VPS was installed with an empty pkg repository; making the change to /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos allowed me to repopulate it and configure what I needed to -- thank you very much!

gnome-terminal & xfce terminal closes immediately

It creates a window, but nothing appears in the window -no errors or anything.

gnome-terminal & xfce terminal closes immediately

I'm experiencing this too on FreeBSD 10/i386, I"ve tried installing gnome-terminal and it has the same behavior (a window pops up and quickly disappears). No error messages, no core file. I'm starting X with startx, not with xdm or any other display manager.

    Favorite Editors

I used to feel the same way, until I got used to vi (NOT vim) and realized that I already knew the important keys from playing nethack. There's still a lot of neat tricks you can do in simple vi that I'm not aware of how to do in other editors (eg. :<line number> to go to a specific line...

Okay, so what's so great about FreeBSD?

I'll start with the down-sides: 1)No wireless drivers for my laptop 2)Network appears slower on 7.2/i386 than it should (though I'm trying to look into what's causing this; but FreeBSD is the only OS I'm having problems with) 3)FreeBSD is ignored by third party application developers (not...

What news sites are you reading?

I'm in the same boat, I use news.yahoo.com -mostly just for getting the general gist of what we're supposed to care about. I looked for sites a few years back but didn't see anything I was impressed with (everything is either slanted or bland or both) and went back to yahoo. God help me...

    Xorg screen refresh.

I had the same problem, and disabling moused (after reading this post) fixed it.

    Windows 7 RC

My laptop came with Vista, and I tried W7 on it; the upgrade went great but it's not really compelling enough to be worth having to wipe everything off of it when it bricks next year -and the FAQ says that you'll have to do a clean install even if you want to upgrade from the RC to the full...

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

It's my understanding they say the same thing about BSD too. Wrong in both cases. ;)

    kFreeBSD anyone ?

There's a much stronger argument for using the NetBSD kernel -on the Debian/NetBSD port's page they essentially say that they want to take advantage of NetBSD's portability and the fact it runs on so many platforms. The FreeBSD kernel doesn't really offer enough of an advantage to swap it in...

One reason I don't think I would try Ubuntu

It's good to know how to do these things, yes. But just because someone doesn't want to worry about taking those steps doesn't mean that they don't know how.

One reason I don't think I would try Ubuntu

You reach a point where it's no longer learning, however -it's just mindless jumping through hoops (eg -it's 2009; there's no reason I should have to edit anything to enable sound. FreeBSD is the only OS that requires me to do so, Solaris, NetBSD and OpenBSD don't). Not everyone who uses...

One reason I don't think I would try Ubuntu

Define "worked". I have to install proprietary drivers to get wireless and NVidia to work; but I'd have to do the same under FreeBSD -plus edit /boot/loader.conf to get sound. To me, Ubuntu works better out of the box than does FreeBSD. Speaking in general terms, I'm relatively experienced as...

One reason I don't think I would try Ubuntu

That's why I usually include the terms 'FreeBSD' or even just 'BSD' to my searches. I guess some people prefer to go for the positive, and some for the negative...

One reason I don't think I would try Ubuntu

The last entry on that thread is from November, 2008. PLEASE tell me that you didn't just go trolling through the Ubuntu forum archives looking for crap to b???h about over here on the FreeBSD forum:stud

This site may harm your computer

It only lasted for an hour, so I doubt it caused that much harm to FreeBSD.
