    GUI installer

GUI = Graphican User Interface TUI = Text User Interface It's a textbased user interface and not graphical. But this is not the key! The UI can be improved because the navigation is not optimal. The improvement should be not realy graphical. My experience with the current UI is not so...

    bsdconferences, youtube and no_flash alternative?

LOL! bsd on youtube. absurd! To watch bsd-video: shutdown bsd -> restart PC -> on dualboot-screen select WinXP -> start your favorite WinXP browser... Why not place this videos in a mpeg format on a neutral ftp-server (like freebsd.org)???

    FreeBSD to rethink target audience?

Hem... PBIs are not a must. You can furthermore use the original ports and packages. So this is not a real argument against PC-BSD. Of course the KDE is a must... and this could be a contra argument.

    Cannot mount Volume cd9660

Yes, hald and dbus is up and runing at boot time. I have the generic kernel. I haven't changed this. And reading a Data-CD as root is still possible. So it's not a hardware or driver issue... Only a setting.

    Cannot mount Volume cd9660

This is good and intended. :) I don't mount anything! I insert the Data-CD, the CD-drive rotates and seconds later I see a message dialog as written in my first post. I think it is an automount from HAL and D-BUS of GDM. And as said: it works with USB flash devices very well. I plug in the...

    FreeBSD to rethink target audience?

Mel_Flynn! Yes, I have tried PC-BSD and it's a great desktop-setup of FreeBSD. Every thing works out of the box! But it uses KDE and I don't like KDE. :e And I think I'm not the only one. So I try setup my own FreeBSD with Gnome. Not easy but I have no choice. ;)

    Cannot mount Volume cd9660

Thanks for your post. But it doesn't work, I get the same message box. I have wrote this in /etc/devfs.conf and reboot: perm /dev/acd0 0666 Is an "own" setting in devfs.conf needed? Who needs the permission? Me (the user) or the haldaemon?

    FreeBSD to rethink target audience?

Please let me say something about supported hardware: I don't think that a good desktop OS must support every available hardware. Of course it is important to support categories of hardware e.g. a couple of webcams, a couple of video cards etc. If I know that I can use a webcam and the...

    FreeBSD to rethink target audience?

If FreeBSD is not a desktop OS, then they should delete most or all desktop-related applications from the three CD-ROMs that every user can download. So it's clear for everyone that it is a server OS only. But if the distribution has every piece of desktop and multimedia software as standard...

    Cannot mount Volume cd9660

Hello! If I insert a Data-CD into the CD-RW-Drive, I get a dialog that say: I'm using Gnome 2.20.1 on FreeBSD 6.3. I have followed the instractions in http://www.freebsd.org//gnome/docs/faq2.html#q1. Added gnome_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf. The user haldaemon was not installed while HAL and...
