    Thanks I was also running into this issue on a fairly new install on a PowerEdge 1950 server which I had updated to FreeBSD 9.1 from 9.0. Running the command from kern/173541 fixed the problem. Thanks!

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but you won't be able to use SHA256 / SHA512 as your default hash in anything prior to FreeBSD 9. If I am wrong, I'd love to know how to do it (I'm on 8.2-RELEASE).

    Well it appears that using a forced mount still works on /usr -- I'm going to order a replacement drive. I'll use Seagate's bootable utility to see if I can't fix the issue. Will report back when I know more.
