    While I agree that ZFS being here basically removes the need for btrfs, there's no sense in going on a mini rant on unrelated projects. Also if you really care that much about licensing, it'd help to get it right. The Linux kernel is explicitly GPLv2 and is refusing to go to v3.

    Linux is the kernel. Ubuntu is the distribution/OS.

But I'm really fond of the FreeBSD way of handling things, and with pkgng it's now feasible to have a system setup and updated mostly from binary...

    You're building the port, but you're not building it from source. Adobe only distributes binary packages of Flash. "Building this port pulls down that binary, and rep packages it for use in FreeBSD. Distributing the binary modified is probably against the EULA, but I don't know for sure.

    Why isn't "rename" in the base installation?

    I'm quite fond of misc/mmv myself for mass renaming. It's wild card support is fairly intuitive to me and it does the job.

    Firefox in WINE, or perhaps the official Linux build of Google Chrome? Though I'd avoid both of thus until it was just unfeasible to run the existing plugin in nspluginwrapper myself.
