Oldest version of FreeBSD still in current use

    Not FreeBSD, but I've got 4.4BSD permanently running in an gxemul: $ uname -a 4.4BSD *****.*******.** 4.4BSD-Lite 4.4BSD-Lite #6: Mon Jun 13 21:52:19 MET DST 1994 oscar@*****.******.**:/sys/compile/BSD DEC $ uptime 4:35PM up 12 days, 17:48, 1 user, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 The...

Did you use SUN workstation ?

I briefly used Sun workstations at work in the late nineties, and when they dropped in price I bought some for home use. I've owned a Sparcstation 10, a Ultra 5 and a Ultra 60 with ultrastore 711, scsi tape drive and a SunPCI II card. Ran Solaris, OpenBSD and FreeBSD on them. Later I got a...

    Jails in zroot/jails or zroot/ROOT/default/jails?

Yes, you're right. What appeared to be a good idea last night when I was tired, doesn't anymore. The only good use-case I came up with last night doesn't even make sense, since you'd never start upgrading the jails until the host had been successfully upgraded first. Thanks, and never mind.

    Jails in zroot/jails or zroot/ROOT/default/jails?

I've always created a zfs filesystem for each jail under zroot/jails or zroot/usr/jails. I've used beadm for the host, and relied only on periodic snapshots for the jails. But today it occurred to me that if I put them under zroot/ROOT/default/jails I can use beadm to create boot environments...

Solved Huge GENERIC /boot/kernel in 10.1-RELEASE

With freebsd-update you can choose if you want the backup of the kernel to include symbols or not. If you update from sources, the backup kernel directory will include symbols. FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE AMD64, build from source: % du -sh kernel* 478M kernel 478M kernel.old % du -sh -I...

    New server

Indeed it does. I've recently installed 10-current by using the virtual kvm from my laptop, booting from an usb image on the same laptop mapped as virtual media to the server. The server was powered on using the web interface on the remote access card. The operating system see the remote...

    Playing with XEN

Just one comment with regards to virtualization support in OpenBSD. OpenBSD 5.3 and later has virtio drivers. I've been running those as a guest on a KVM server. AFAIK you can also use virtio drivers on BHyVe. I've never tried Xen, though, so I can't comment on that.

    New server

I've got one of those, only with a N36L instead of the N40L cpu in the model you linked to, and I absolutely love it:-) They are decent quality low end servers, space and power efficient, virtually silent, supports ECC memory, and if equipped with the remote access card (lights out management)...

Backup - "Dump over SCP" like

Please re-read post #3. ssh backupuser@server1 dump 0uaLf - /filesystemtodump | dd of=backupfile.dump On server2 you use ssh to execute dump on server1. The option "-f -" is used to specify that the output will be sent to stdout, which will be sent through your ssh connection back to...

Backup - "Dump over SCP" like

How about this: Add the backup user on server1 to group operator. Then you can run a command like this on server2: ssh backupuser@server1 dump 0uaLf - /filesystemtodump | dd of=backupfile.dump

I've had the same or atleast similar problem before, and managed find a solution for it. It's described in this thread: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28992

    UFS filesystem - backup software

IMO dump(8) is _the_ backup program for UFS. I especially like its ability to span multiple tapes, and the -L option for safely dumping live filesystems. When recommending dump people often refer to a document called "Torture-testing Backup and Archive Programs: Things You Ought to Know But...

freebsd-update no mirrors found, invalid signature.

Okay, I've solved the problem I'm having with freebsd-update. Hopefully this can help the OP. While running freebsd-update I got this error message: $ sudo freebsd-update fetch Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... none found. Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-RELEASE from...

freebsd-update no mirrors found, invalid signature.

I had the same problem. It turned out it was the dns server on my local router that caused the problem. Started using another DNS server and the problem went away. I read about it somewhere on the net, but unfortunately can't find it just now. I think it was something about DNS servers...

Processor opinion: Athlon II or Phenom II

Here's another vote for AMD. I might upgrade my home server this year. The Xeon are the only intel CPUs I'd fancy, and please correct me if i'm wrong, the only ones that supports ECC memory. On the AMD side of the fence, there's ECC and virtualization support on every model. Including the cheap...
