ZFS write performance issues with WD20EARS

Sorry to bump an old thread, but with the upcoming release of 8.2 I'd like to ask if anyone knows whether or not it includes fixes for the 4K sector problem. I took a quick glance at the FreeBSD 8.2 Release Engineering TODO but it doesn't seem to mention anything.

    Read a line from file

All work is homework. As for the program, doesn't the standard library have something to read a line from a file?

    PBIs coming to 9.0

Because no one knows where your question is coming from. Just because FreeBSD is getting the option to use PBIs, all of a sudden it's indistinguishable from PC-BSD? If anything, at least one component of PC-BSD (PBIs for instance) is becoming more like it came from FreeBSD because it's been...

    PBIs coming to 9.0

Why not? Do you think it's a bad thing? Should FreeBSD move in the opposite direction and become as user unfriendly as possible? Should FreeBSD not move in any direction at all?

    if kernel rewritten from scratch

Here's an entire OS written in a pure functional language, as opposed to Scheme and LISP which are mostly functional. http://programatica.cs.pdx.edu/House/

mpcd: set mplayer screenshot output directory

No. I didn't think of this as a bug, so the thought of filing a bug report never occurred to me. It's not a problem for me anymore though. :)

mpcd: set mplayer screenshot output directory

I wrote a small program called mpcd that allows you to set the mplayer screenshot output directory. It's targeted towards people that like to use mplayer without a GUI. I've been using this myself for the past month or two. It is written in Python 3.1, but with a little fiddling I'm sure you...

    User groups

Groups themselves don't give any permissions, it only puts users into a particular category. Permissions are set on files which you can see using: ls -l $ ls -l su* -r-sr-xr-x 1 root wheel 14500 Jul 18 22:24 su* -r-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 8860 Jul 18 22:24 sum* $ From the above code...

    Your advice: cups or lpd?

I use CUPS and followed the instructions here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/cups/index.html. Since you're using ports, don't forget to do the last page "Fine Tuning CUPS-Related Ports". When you get CUPS working, this port might come in handy once in a while: print/cups-pdf.

Shutdown and Reboot in XFCE4: disabled again

I didn't have trouble with shutdown/reboot, but I did have auto-mounting problems. For me, it's still broken after the hal-0.5.14_10 update. Is it the same for anyone else?

    PBIs coming to 9.0

If you're a person that likes to keep your system as lean as possible I can respect that. There are also those that would like to use FreeBSD as a desktop OS that would gladly sacrifice a little HD space for convenience. Like I said, I was just speculating. It's much more likely that PBIs...

    PBIs coming to 9.0

No, it was just speculation on my part. I've only used PC-BSD a few times. I never stuck with it, but loved the idea of PBIs; a single self-contained installer that frees the user from any dependency worries. I used packages when I first started fiddling with FreeBSD and always got in...

    PBIs coming to 9.0

I just read this in the quarterly status report and was wondering if anyone else is excited about this as I am. Maybe it will completely replace packages.

How to Dump an Audio CD to ISO

You can't cat or dd an audio CD, and you can't mount or mdconfig->mount an image created from an audio CD. Here's the output when I try. You'll get similar output from mount and mdconfig->mount. $ cat /dev/cd0 cat: /dev/cd0: Device not configured # cat /dev/cd0 cat: /dev/cd0: Device not...

    if kernel rewritten from scratch

I'll explain. This is an easy question to answer if you think about evolution. It's clear that the chicken came first. Something that wasn't completely a chicken gave birth to a chicken. What about the egg? Isn't it a chicken egg? Well, no, it was a "something that wasn't completely a...
